That's a really general question. Are you talking about grabbing whatever's to hand in a break-in?
Because you should never have that problem. You should make an effort to keep an at least half decent weapon close to hand all the time.
That said, one of the most underrated improvised weapons you are likely to have is a fire extinguisher. The spray will blind and confuse an assailant, then the heavy tank can be used as a bludgeon.
Improvised flailing weapons can also work. A couple of soup cans in a couple of plastic bags will do some damage if you have room to swing them.
But seriously, just keep a knife in your pocket and a bat in your room.
