I might do it down the road, but for the most part I plan on keeping it how it is. I would like to find another way to stop the bipod from sliding around the barrel, but what I have now works just fine and holds the cleaning rod in place. Just wish it wasn't so bulky.

Thinking about putting a CNCWarrior traingle stock, Stormwerkz hinge, and Krebs mounting block setup on muh Yugo. It's one of the NPAPs with the ungodly shit stocks they put on them for a while. I took a belt sander to it to make it useable and refinished it but I'm still not completely happy with it.

However ~$250 seems like a lot to throw into a gun I paid $500 for.

Is this a stupid idea, especially considering I can get a case of GT for that?

Why is it SLR104s are the only AK in stock at unjacked prices right now? SLR107s are like 1500 for some reason. I wanted a 106 but I hear they have massive problems. I'm hesitant to get a 74 because the ammo is getting a bit scarce. 104s have QC problems like the 106?

Pretty much it comes down to brand.
AVOID IO (Interordnance) AT ALL COSTS.
Avoid RAS series rifles.

NPAPs, WASRs, PSA AK47s, DDI, any Arsenal, and Definitive Arms are all good brands. For your price point I would recommend getting an Arsenal. Those can run $1000-$1500 depending on receiver type, caliber, etc.

Speaking of caliber, if you are getting an AK as a general purpose SHTF rifle, get 7.62x39. It is more common than 5.45 here in the states, and mags are cheaper and more common.

Personally, I am of the opinion that neither 5.45 nor 7.62 are "better" than each other; one round is good for one things while the other is good for something else.

Based on your needs and budget, I will recommend the Arsenal SLR-107FR. It sits right now at $999. It is in 7.62x39mm, a common, inexpensive caliber, and will be more available than 5.45 during SHTF.

A "good" AK is one with the least amount or only slight imperfections.
VEPRs are the only AKs I've seen with little to nothing wrong with them. Generally all AKs will have something "off"; whether its a canted stock thats 1/100th of a millimeter off or a front sight thats off completely; so don't get salty that your AK is slightly imperfect when you get it.

He beats the ever loving shit out of his rifles during their 5000 round tests, running them over with cars, throwing them on concrete, in rivers, mud... just trying to induce a failure of any kind.

Really, what you need to look out for there is if a rifle will start to damage itself (like IO rifles literally shooting themselves apart). If a rifle makes it through his tests without a failure or functional damage then I will be very impressed with it.

I've found the easiest way to determine if it has canted sights is just by simply by sighting down the top of the rifle and seeing if everything looks even. Everything should line up. I've had limited success with the upside down table trick. If the sights are canted badly enough to prevent you from being able to sight it in, then you should be able to notice. Or if you're bad at eyeballing stuff like that then get a friend (implying) to look it over too.

Honestly I feel like real surplus SKSs have more character than the butchered and neutered AKs we can get in the US. You can get an SKS in basically the same configuration that it would have been issued in. SKSs are semi-auto by design so you don't have to feel neutered in that regard. It's all original. I shot an SKS for the first time that someone at the VA nuggetfest let me shoot and fell in love. Why don't you shoot yours more? I'm highly attracted to them all around. I'm not trying to discourage you from getting an AK but I'm not trying to encourage you to ditch the SKS either.

The real kicker would be if the stock is the original matching stock. Does it have the serial number on the left side with NO x's? Refurbs will have the old serial number X'd out but non-refurbs should sport the original serial number. It's a hardwood stock, which is a good sign.

Sure you could sell it for more than you paid, but that's a true military surplus rifle. Any AK you buy, save for maybe a $50k+ full auto bringback, is going to be a commercial rifle. That's a real military rifle, and it's super cool. Very Russian feeling, shoots well, cool STG-44 tilting bolt deal, VZ-58 sort of open top short stroke piston deal, and the stripper clips actually work well. There's tons of stuff to like about an SKS.

I bought my Norinco SKS for $100 with 1000 rounds of Chicom ammo, and I'd love a Russian SKS but they're like $600 and I'm stuck in the mindset of my SKS being so cheap. It's been my go to semi auto center fire rifle for nearly 9 years now. I love it immensely. 5.45 is my favorite caliber and I also love my SLR104 very very much too but my vz was the first scary salt rifle that I went out and bought when I was 18, and it's very special to me. I like shooting more than my Norinco AK and my Maadi.

Whenever I drift the sight drum I always use a sight tool in addition to a 5.45 barrel stub used as a cheater bar on the T handle. Also, you need to position the sight tool in a way that you won't just spin the sight tool.

My npap has a twisted reciever slightly, what should i do? Any chance of century doing anything? Also, calicuk, so double fuk't.

But the rear trunion is not on the same square as the front trunion. in addition the front sight, and gas block are canted slightly, but not enough to impede function, supposedly. Can i repin this npap's fsp myself with a hammer and a punch?

Hey sorry dude, here's a pic.


I cant even tell what's wrong on the rifle anymore. Everything looks slanted, it all depends on where you reference.

The best way to hold the rifle is to twist it slightly so the buttstock is not directly on the y-axis.

But the gas block and front sight both appear to be canted a few degrees.

But the rifle shoots fine and cycles smoothly. Im not sure what the fuck to do with it, i only wanted ONE ak but this one is kind of offending my autism.

but by looking at both trunions, they appear level on the bottom corners, which leads me to believe the reciever is slightly twisted. What effect this has on the front end is unknown, but i think the front end is also wonky. Fuck this, should learned to not cheap out on things.

I don't use the sks often any more because the vz is the ultimate 762 gun imo, but I'd miss the hell out of my sks if I sold it. They're such neat rifles.

I miss it but like I said I only paid $100 for the gun and 1000 rounds and I ended up selling the gun alone for $400 so it definitely was a nice deal for me, but yeah I do miss having an SKS. There's just something so appealing about having a traditional looking rifle shooting a cheap and common caliber with minimal recoil. I really want another SKS someday and I've also been toying with the idea of a Mini 14 for a while too for the same reason, the only thing really keeping me from picking a Mini 14 up is that I like stripper clips and it can't use them with one.
