Is there any practical use for this gun and others like it?

I've never seen it discussed on here.
>>
as yankee marshal put it (yeah go ahead and hate me for watching him) its the hummer h2 of the gun world. yeah its big and it looks intimidating but it tries to be 1000 different things and isnt that good for any of them.

that being said i have one and carry it as a second pistol when im hiking camping or fishing, its just a glorified snake gun that can shoot .45 long colt
>>
>>31751199
I was gonna disagree with you until you said snake gun. The judge is just a fun blaster.
>>
With the right ammo it is OK. It is still a revolver, though and a Taurus revolver at that.
With Lehigh 45 colts or Nobel Sport .40s it is actually pretty good for SD. Even for an oversized, old fashioned gun. Three 40 cal balls that meet FBI penetration per squeeze? Not too bad. HPs that open so big they cover four open .45 ACPs? Pretty gud, m8. I have one but it simply is not as good as a good pistol. That said, it can be fun.

why do I want this
>>
I own the poly version in a 2.5" barrel.
It's....OK, hitting a 2" group at 15 yards is a tall order with 45lc. Never tried 45 Schofield through it though
the shotgun is bretty much useless after 10 feet, coupled with there not being a lot of good 410 loads.

It's a passable nightstand gun, truck gun, snake gun, and range toy, but there are better tools for each of those needs
>>
>>31751163
The S&W Governor is the best nightstand gun that money can buy.
>simple point and shoot gun that even a half asleep idiot can fire without glasses.
>the reliability of a revolver
>no safety to fuss with
>no magazine to fuss with
>Tritium night sights
>with buckshot, each pull of the trigger is the equivalent of firing four .22LR rounds at the same time, in a head size grouping at 20ft, thus greatly increasing the chances of getting a lethal head shot.
>You can use 45 ACP moon clips for fast reloading after the buckshot runs out.

The only reason .410 handguns get a bad rep is because people use the wrong ammo. Only use buckshot; don't use birdshot or 45 ACP as the primary load.
>>
>>31751544
I kinda always figured that would be the one niche it would be good at.

Even with buckshot .410 aint all that impressive, but in point blank ranges like a home invasion scenario it would do okay.

I would rather a full size 12 guage or my .45 but being a revolver and having some shot spread it would be a great gun to keep around for the wife to have access to.

Its simple enough to use shes not gonna panic and short-stroke it like a shotgun, or forget to take the saftey off like a semi-auto, and if she points it down a hallway and unloads it she has a better chance of hitting something.
>>
>>31751544
>>31751582
I also forgot to mention that it's a lot easier to hide and move in close quarters with a hand gun.

I once almost got home invaded and learned the hard way that it is really hard to move around in a house with a long barrel gun. Also, loading a round into a chamber gave away my position; thats not a problem for a revolver.

Is it worth it to try and make wax slugs out of .410? Also would wax slugs probabaly be a bad idea with a revolver because of the cylinder gap?
>>
>>31751873

>>
>>31751854
Because it's already .75 caliber and anything else would be annoying to make.

Also with the mass needed for it to not explode in your hand it probably won't have much more kick than a normal shorty shotgun pistol probably less.

energy, not bullet dimension, is what is important. energy does the work of destroying tissue - creating that wound cavity - killing etc.

Each pellet of 000 buckshot coming out of a revolver carries approximately the same kinetic energy as a .22LR round (~155 joules). So the amount of tissue damage that each pellet causes is roughly equivalent to a .22LR round, with the added benefit that you won't get over penetration with a pellet like you might get with a close range .22LR head shot. In sum, all four pellets will do a little more damage than a 45 ACP round, with the added benefit that you get a shot spread that increases the chances of getting a critical head shot.
>>
>>31752057
Each pellet was penetrating 18 inches of ballistic jell. So ya over penetration can be an issue.
>>
>>31752075
The majority of the reviews I've seen show ~8-10 inch penetration:
http://410handguns.com/410_gel_results.html#Fed_01

Most be differences in gel densities.

All I know is that a .22LR will go through a deer's head, and thus should also go through a human's head. The wider buckshot should slow down quicker, depositing more of its energy into the head.
>>
I have a s&w governor as my concealed carry, no one can tell I have on on me at pretty much any given time

It has a modified trigger and is butter to fire, I practice with it every time I head to the range and am consistent with shot placement. I also use the kinds of ammo specifically for a judge with the deep penetration and tight grouping that come with them

I hope I never have to pull the thing in a life or death scenario, but I am fully confident in my 6 shots of buck that I will be able to take someone down quick with just a pull or two of the trigger
>>
>>31752108
this guy was also getting some of his 000buck to pass all the way though 16 inches of ballistic jell.

you can load a bunch of different types of ammo calibers and styles so your sights are always off and not consistent so you have a lot of extra excuses for why you missed what you were shooting at because you wanted to use the .410 anyway and everyone knows shotgunshells get that spread so you might be able to hit a barn
seems like it'd make a neat little hiking gun tho depending on how hot of .45lc it can take

From what I hear they are kinda unimpressive.

The shallow rifling required to not be considered a DD means shot spread is super shitty whilst also garunteeing that it doesnt perform all that well as a .45 LC carbine either.

Not TERRIBLE, mind you. Just not great. Kind of one of those cases of trying to do 2 things at once and whilst not failing, also not really excelling either.
>>
>>31753296
It's .45 caliber. The shallow rifling is to make it more effective as a shotgun not to skirt some imaginary ATF classification.
>>

I got mine for the same reasons a lot of people did. I carry it on the trail for a campsite gun and and small game. Plus, it's bretty gud at blasting cans in the back yard and making your friends laugh just because of its sheer ridiculousness.

That being said, I already was reloading .45 Colt and it's my bed stand gun simply because it was my first DA pistol.
>>
>>31753296
it excels at being one of the most beautiful rifles ever.

it actually being functional is a bonus.
>>
So I won one a Judge in a raffle and ending up selling it a year later. It's a fun range toy but unless I was shooting a snake from 5 feet away I can't see any use for it.

.410 is a poor choice for self defense, even the defense loads are pretty meh and spread quickly thanks to the shallow rifling.

.45LC is a stout round, but there plenty of guns that shoot it better. Or you can go with a more plentiful round in a easier to carry gun with higher capacity, like a .45ACP semi-auto.

It's a fun toy, but I wouldn't choose it to defend my life. Also for something that people take camping, the blued verison hated moisture, to the point that there was surface rust on the trigger and in serial number engraving.
>>
>>31751515
Not a lot of good .410? Nigger what. There's a lot of options, with the obvious limitations of the .410. I carry Federal 000 buck. Good spread and penetration . Carried PDX1 defense round but didn't like the spread. The 00 buck is good. The bird shot is fun. 2 /12 and 3 inch options all around.
>>
>>31753930
Bro I have bad news for you. I didn't want to have to tell you like this, but here it goes... I think you might be retarded. PDX1 is obvious shit. I mean if you looked at the gay picture on the box and saw it was a couple of frisbees and some bird shot and still chose to carry it for SD... That's a clear symptom of diminished capacity. I'm sorry. I will help you pick out a helmet if you want.
>>
>>31753654
Don't agree with the defense rounds being bad. They pack a punch if you can land it. But yeah, the bluing rusts constantly and everywhere. It's ridiculous
>>
>>31753971
PDX1 in 12 gauge is good, so I bought the .410. And I wasn't disapointed. It does what it says. Good snake round. Not every one is looking for a hand cannon that can puncture ten inches of steel at a mile. You fucking autist.

It's a nightstand gun, you're going to be shooting at targets ~10-30 feet away, not targets 150 feet away. The spread of the buckshot is perfect for its intended use.

Each pull of the trigger gives you 4 pellets on target. 5 or 6 rounds X 4 pellets = 20-24 pellets on target within a second or two; with each pellet having a chance to get a lethal head shot. Good luck trying to get that many shots on target using any other nightstand gun.

Based on my time with the Judge, the defense loads with BBs spread massively after about 3 yards, the buckshot will spread too widely after about 7.

I don't live alone in a basement. If the spread is larger than yo' mamma's cunt, those pellets could harm someone or something I care about. I'd rather get decent night sights and a flashlight on a semi-auto pistol loaded with JHPs. Shot placement is important, and if you own a gun you are obligated to learn to shoot it accurately. I'd rather aim my shots than depend on "chance."
>>
>>31753930
410 is inherently a bad shotgun load, and putting it behind a 2.5 - 6" barrel doesn't do it any favors. it only got thrown into this abomination of a gun because the dimensions happened to be similar enough for 45 colt and 454 casull

it was originally marketed to be good for snakes and small rodents. I assume that and the governor are indeed useful for that. It's small enough to conceal, moreso if you get a public defender and it will certainly work for defense but there are better revolvers for CC for less money.

It became a self-defense meme for a while because a few companies were making boutique .410 self-defense loads with watch battery sized discs mixed with buck and birdshot. That was basically a gimmick, their performance tended to not be predictable/consistent and therefor not as useful as a normal load.

If you like it and want one, then by all means buy one. I recommend sticking with a good defense load in .45 colt if you plan on using it for self-defense. .410 birdshot for snakes and rats.
