What's a good reliable revolver that can be concealed easily and won't cost me an arm and a leg? I'm in kind of a bind here, I live in a shitty part of town and my neighborhood has seen an outbreak of burglaries/robberies. I have a good shotgun for home defense, and want a revolver for self defense because I'm really comfortable with them. I was thinking about pic related, but can't find any for less than $500.
>>
>>31746385
A used j-frame chambered for .38spl +p is exactly what you're looking for
And besides, if you're on a budget why are you looking the expensive versions?
>>
>>31746424
I just used the first pic I found of an SP101 and didn't realize it was the Wiley one. I wanted a .357 because of the duality of the ammo I can use. All the revolvers and even semis in my area are priced at msrp for used items too, so that doesn't help.
>>
>>31746424
>>31746385
i agree
s&w j-frame .38spec
used j-frames can be found all over the place for sub-$500

my rugers in pic
been shootin & carryin this sp101 for 3+years
..confirmed for quality gun
>>
>>31746557
i reccommend a revolver like that, fuck a snub or anything shorter than ~3in. Mine is probably out of your price range and has the hillary hole but I got a s&w model 60. You get so much more power the longer your barrel is if you load the right .357 ammo.
>>
>>31746557
The problem with smaller j-frames is that my hands are pretty big. I'm 6'2" so I guess size isn't much of an issue. Is there a j-frame you'd recommend specifically? I'm trying to stay away from polymer ones like the LCR.
>>
>>31746458
Honestly the only revolvers chambered for .357 in that price range are Taurus and Rossi
A j-frame will outlive both

Well there is the EAA windicator
But good luck finding that and it has ZERO aftermarket
>>
>>31746630
Gander mountain has them.

fyi
J-frame =/= general 5 shot revolver
When people are talking about j-frames they usually mean the Smith and Wesson branded small frame revolver
Anyways
S&W has the largest aftermarket for grips
>>
>>31746753
What's a good older one? There's a lot on armslist where I am and could probably jew them down.

Worth every penny.
>>
>>31746789
M49 or 'cheifs special' is a good one to look for, bobbed hammer .38spl with cut sights and 21/4" barrel.
Mine was $350 with a holster and a few boxes of ammo.
>>
>>31746609
larger grips are available for j-frames
..those guns have a huge aftermarket

>>31746789
Honestly, you really you can't go wrong with S&W
Epically if you're on budget
But if you can, try to get a prelock model
Those will cost more of course
If you can't, no problem the lock can be removed

Pic related is the lock
Also known as a Hillary hole
>>
>>31746385
Juat pony up the extra $50 for a used one. They sell so well that the used price is only about $40 less than that of a new one. Just bought a 3". Just do it. no regrets.
>>
>>31746385
Ruger Super Redhawk Toklat.
>>
>>31746915
the hole left over from the removal makes a nice little place to oil you gun from without ripping it apart.
>>
>>31746385
You are going to want at least 3 inch barrel. What sticks out the most in conceal weapons is the grip, so make sure you use thinner grips. Also helps with using speed loaders.

I know some people prefer S&W but a Ruger SP101 will do the job.
>>
>>31746915
What's the largest J-frame you can think of that isn't dirty harry size?
>>31747051
I like both. S&W has that lifetime warranty though

>>
>>31747174
Not him, but a 642 is slightly smaller than a 638 on the backside. I think he wants to know the chunkiest one.

>>31747258
Oh
Well then I recommend the model 638
It has the ability of being cocked and you don't have to worry about any snagging on the draw
>>
>>31747428
Whats the one on the top left?
>>
>>31746802
>image too small to see that hideous seam on the barrel
>>
>>31746915
>>31747030
The problem with this is not the hole. You can take the actual lock out and leave the stupid black thing it is like zero effort to do so. The problem for me is the gap left next to the hammer. Seems like something big could get down in there.

>>31747089
Not as quickly as squirting oil in that hole, which is a fucking tarded thing to do and commonly repeated fuddlore.
>>
>>31747500
Ehh, but the seam is functional and allows a large degree of versatility. Taken that way, I think it looks neat. Then again, most people say the gun is ugly even if you edit out the seam.
>>
>>31747753
The seam is a known weak point though.
>>
>>31747848
Fuckin', alright, lemme have it, what's the bad news on this? My research never turned this up.
>>
>>31746385
Ruger LCR works well for me.
>>
>>31746630
Are Windicators any good? My local counter has a bunch of them at a good price, but it always looked pretty rough to me. And that's a new one.
>>
>>31748032
They're decent. Heavy as fuck and the barrel isn't finished on the end where they cut it off, but other than that they're ok little guns.
>>
>>31747942
The number one reason I, and every other gander mountain gunsmith in the nation, can't fix these in house is because they typically rupture when squibbed or flexed because they work harden that area from milling, and it makes it super brittle.
>>
I just moved to colorado, and i want something to carry when i go hiking. I was looking at the .454 rugers is this an acceptable choice?
>>
>>31748124
That's a heavy gun but it'll do the job. I'd go with a .44 or a judge/governor myself but that'll take care of whatever comes your way.

>>

>>31748156
Don't listen to this idiot.

Buy a .44
>>
>>31748201
Any reason to go .44 over .454?
Its probably overkill but i assume the main difference will be weight and price for ammo?
>>
>>31748270
A 44 can only shoot 44 mag and 44 spl. The 454 can shoot .45 lc and .45 schofeild(lol). The 454 can shoot heavier bullets faster. So I would just do the .44. likely any dangous event you are in with nature will be close range. So the extra power from the 454 will be excessive. Just get the heaviest bullet in a hard cast swc in a full power loading and be done.
>>
I have a sp101 2.25" hammerless .357/.38

Carry it daily. It's not terrible to shoot even with fullhouse .357s, though the reason it's not so bad to shoot is because for its size it's pretty damn heavy. The trigger pull is attrocious, but once you get used to it every other trigger you pull is amazing!

Mine came with the talo exclusive wood grip inserts, much to my delight. Figured it was just coming with the black plastic slatted inserts.

Been considering getting the hogue grip for it, and a night-site for the front. Maybe send it to the gunsmith to have the trigger smoothed out/lightened up a little.

It's got a few machine marks on it, but it's built like a fucking tank and have never had an issue with it.

Sorry, son you're losing my desire to respect your opinion purely because of that namedrop.

So, tell me, how much will it cost to buy a black 60ds from you lot?

My daddy died ten years ago mister. And I'm a contracted gunsmith. I have my own business and take in all the local gun stores warranty services. Only reason I know that little rid bit about gander is because I have to work with their incompetent fucks. And sorry, I don't know how much they'd charge. Probably 30% over msrp depending on your location.

You posted a picture of one, the Ruger SP101. Save your money and get one. I recommend the 3 inch barrel. A little bit of sight radius goes a long way.
>>
>>31749478
About 40% actually. Sorry for being a twat, but them and the local bunker-range tried treating me like a fudd and gander has legit lost my business outside of buyin no4 buckshot- cqt lost any sale they might have made by upcharging a 60ds to 1003.69, but wait, they'll give me five free hours of range time, a $100 value.
>>
>>31748344
You forgot the best .44, Comrade.
>>
>>31751925
That's a bunch of ass hatery if I've ever read. Wtf were they thinking? Luckily for me, I can order gun parts and (sometimes) even full guns for close to cost depending on the make and model, so I never have to deal with the retail end. I can tell you though, unless you're in an area where they use a contracted gunsmith, Do NOT take any of your guns to them or any other big box stores to fix. Either find a reputable smith or send it straight to the manufacturer with copies of bill of sale/warranty info to get it fixed. The amount of shit I get sent to me from those idiots is astounding. I get shit like over milled receivers with a note asking if I can ADD metal back on, to simple screws that need to be tapped out but have been completely stripped or drilled improperly.
