As dawn approaches in the Middle East, ISF and coalition partners are preparing for the fourth day of the offensive to retake Mosul.

ISF's golden division has positioned itself along the northern frontline and most likely be attempting to push south along highway 2 in an attempt to capture the ISIL CW factory and advance as far south as Al Rashidiyah.

Thus far coalition forces are on or ahead of schedule with regards to the offensive's timeline. The only exception is with the town of Qaryat al-Abasi, where ISIL fighters continue to hold the population center after halting various ISF attacks. Despite this, ISF have surrounded the town and have decided to push on, choosing to besiege the town rather than waste time trying to capture it.

Last update (and the most recent one); ISIL has launched a "massive" offensive in Northern Hama. The targets of the attack are the villages of Al-Mufakkar, Tal Al-Tout, and Fritan, which are controlled by the SAA. Last thing that was reported was that the RuAF and the SyAF were providing air support for the troops in the three towns. Fighting is still ongoing and no further reports have surfaced (yet) about the current situation in the three towns.

So, uh... this just happened:

I knew they had already thrown in the towel when it came to oil exports, but is Saudi Arabia in an even worse position than anyone thinks?

Minor update, SAA has just stopped an ISIL attack on Deir Ezzor. ISIL fighters targeted the Heart Hospital in the city, and while they did manage to reach the building, they were unable to enter the structure.

Current estimates put the casualties at 20 dead ISIL fighters and no dead SAA. No word on injured or any updates on the situation as of yet.

Also, each and every one is (theoretically) willing to fight to martyrdom.
We could be seeing some WWII Jap-tier shit in Mosul proper.
>>
>>31739318
hence the post about the town of Qaryat al-Abasi. as ISF pushes deeper into ISIL territory, they're going to find spiderholes and tunnel netwrks all over the place. I wouldn't be surprised if some towns put up light resistance and allow the place to be taken over before crawling out of the shadows with bombs strapped to themselves.

Obviously I can't confirm that, but i suspect that might have been the reason for the Kurds rapidly taking and then retreating from a small town very recently.

would using massive amounts of tear gas or other non lethal agents (doesn't have to be chemical) be realistic to force an entire population out of a city? Would it even be possible?

Technically a Muslim coming into contact with a "filthy" animal against his will or even unbeknownst to them is not Haram. So all youd be doing is wasting money on decent pork chops and bacon.

Plus the flaming pigs were used to scare off elephants, not to take out enemy tunnel installations

Any Arabic speakers here?
I'm trying to figure out what "dababat" and "dababy" mean. I was under the impression from context that it was tanks (plural) and tank(singular), but no translator comes up with that, so I'm confused. I'm probably spelling it wrong, I tried in Arabic too and got nothing.
ضبابات or ضبابي , not real apparently. Slang?

They've already found lots of large tunnels and they're what 10 miles out from the city? I said In a previous thread Isis tunneled and trapped that place into a Vietnamese wet dream. That being said they left 3000 fighters behind and considering the force that's coming for them is in the 10's of thousands we'll see how it goes. I still think it will take a while

This whole war is a shit-show. Arabs cannot into large scale, coordinated maneuver warfare.

Notice how World War 2 was fought in less time than the Syrian war, by military formations that dwarfed the entire population of Iraq.

These fucking dune coons are only good at tribal warfare, where they shoot at each other, from balconies, go home, fuck their goats, and go back to their jobs driving taxis on the weekdays. Same for ISIS, only good at roving around in pick-up trucks and executing civilians and isolated soldiers.

Fuck ALL of them.

First of all coordinating movement of the Iraqi army must be a nightmare, now add in the various assisting militias and you have a shitshow and a half already of diverse and to varying extents disorganised forces to manage/deconflict.
Secondly taking it slow could actually be a sign they've learnt a little bit and are trying to avoid rushing headlong into traps and/or leaving too many pockets of resistance to light fires in their rear.
If they'd just said "everyone go!" and let the Iraqi army, their various allied militias and the Kurds start racing to be the first to the center it would a complete clusterfuck of groups ignoring hotspots of resistance because they want to be first into town and leaving their own and others rears exposed because everyone thought they'd cleared that area, you'd have blue on blue likely on the ground and certainly from the air because half these groups look no different from IS visually, so without any way of knowing who was where and when the USAF and everyone on the ground would end up shredding a bunch of friendlies because they had no idea <group> had advanced that far in that particular area. By instead keeping a measured pace with predefined pauses you have a much better chance to avoid friendly fire incidents because nobody should end up so far ahead of another unit they can be mistaken for hostile, everyone has time to actually clear their designated areas (in theory, lolarabs in reality quite likely) because they aren't racing for style/mile points, and you increase the chance of their logistics keeping up with the advance, I sincerely doubt they're even close to half as good on that front as the US, and being the first to the center of town means fuck all when you get there with 0.5L of water and 3 mags between your men and your support is still sucking their thumbs 10 miles behind you.

Muslims are like any other bullies. Notice how they all started wearing balaclavas again like they did in the early days? They are chickenshits who only kick people who can't retaliate. Sure a few fanatics may be among them, but the majority is crying like little bitches to Allah and searching through their bags for that european passport they have hidden away.

Any conspiracy theorists agree that ISIL is too well funded, supplied and organised to simply be an organic arab movement?

Can we agree that as a bare minimum, NATO member Turkey is providing intel, logistical support and strategic/tactical expertise?
>>
>>31745058
It is well funded by Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
>>
>>31745070
But they both suck at war. Could SA be a proxy for US/UK intel and training?
>>
>>31745089
why tho? A lot of ISIL fighters are former Iraqi soldiers, with some being high ranking Baathist officers.

It is probable that external forces are supplying ISIL with money and equipment, but as for training? We're talking about hardened veterans who potentially fought up to three (conventional; Iran-Iraq, both Iraq wars) wars before this conflict. They are well organized because they've always been organized, even before they joined ISIL.

Isis doesn't suck at war because they drew in good forgien fighters and let's face it after 10 years of war some of the dudes who were still alive were pretty good fighters. They get money and guns from the Saudis and Qatar. Turkey and Isis seem to have fallen out around last year when they started shooting at each other
>>
>>31745124
I just don't see even heavily seasoned ex-Republican Guards being able to achieve this level of success over such a large theatre.

I am tempted to think that there is co-ordination with a modern, sophisticated state level actor. US, UK and Israel are prime suspects IMO. Turkey is a certainty. The scale of the conflict is just too large to be possible without a sophisticated logistics infrastructure and ISTAR.

On an operational level, I agree.
On a tactical and strategic level, I disagree, ISIL is too effective to be doing this all on their own.

Not only old Republican guard leadership, but also Free Iraqi army as well. Merc outfit started to deal with local insurgency and keep marines out of harm's way back in 06-08. Most door kicking was done by these guys. Extensive training by special forces, true patriots. Defunded by Iraqi purges when America pulled out of Iraq, officially turning COIN ground ops over to iraq. They made up the bodies and guns of IS' initial pushes. These guys were hardcore seizing a lot of material from Iraqi gov forces. These guys are why IS is still relevant to this day.

Probably why ISIS can maintain some of the tanks they have captured as well.

I really don't know why so many people think it's hard to keep a t55 up and running. You can work on a front loader? You got yourself a t55 mechanic that will keep it running as long as he can Jerryrig it. Shit afghans in mountain villages, with houses made out of mud were able to do this for decades. T72's a bit more complicated but not astronomically so, and these things were designed (more so the t55) so that joe the dirt farmer can maintain them.

>>31747379
no, just going off what https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%D8%AF%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%A9 and google translate state.

If they are correct, its the opposite. With the plural having the Ta pronounced while the Ta Marbutah being silent.

Again I know fuck all about arabic because i've only been studying it for a month, so I was curios as to why دبابة doesn't have a "T" ending sound.
>>
>>31747471
ohhh ok i misunderstood. it is only a T sound when there is either something attached to it (a pronoun) or if it precedes another noun. a few examples:

dababat sooriya (tanks OF syria)
dababit-ha (her tank)

with adjectives it stays the same such as:
dababa kabirah (big tank)

by itself it is always just dababah, and the spelling only changes from ta marbootah to Ta if there is an attached pronoun
>>
>>31746893
Isis has no western armor. They did capture a few m1s during the early days but these were either all destroyed or abandoned. So I don't know what point you're trying make bring up western armor like they really ever operated it in any gregarious way.

Anyone who has followed the war knows Isis and al nusra are some of the best fighters over there and were even at the very start of the war, they had the best pool of fighters and ex republican guard/ Baathists leaders to pick from. My buddy who was a marine training the new Iraqi army over there said you could tell who was ex republican guard because you didn't have to teach them to zero their rifles and other infantry shit that a lot of the random fighters just don't know/do.

They aren't being trained by Turkish commandos or clandestine cia/Israeli agents

well a lot of the turkmen groups are definitely trained by the turks and in some cases the US, and many of them are directly affiliated with or defect to ANF or ISIS.

but yes, their best soldiers are probably afghan/iraq/chechen insurgency vets.
>>
>>31745058
The following is my opinion and please correct me where I go wrong

I feel like IS had two big trump cards in their early days
>very experienced senior ranks from Iraq (and Syria?), many with a decade or more of insurgent campaigning experience in the area
>propaganda that brings in plenty of cheap cannon fodder all over the Arab world

From what I saw of early reports, they were a monolithic organisation. A departure from the much more common type of jihadi group which is a disparate set of jihadi groups in a loose alliance, usually glued together by money, and sometimes even by common goal
They struck targets which were financially lucrative too. Taking a city also provides taxing options and Raqqa Fried Chicken probably brings in a billion a year at least. Past a certain point, when their propaganda had left its mark, I can see money flowing in through donations too. All it takes is one "rogue" Gulf State Prince and that's a few million bucks on the ledger.

Also don't forget who they were fighting, coming to prominence a time when the quality of fighting forces of the region was at a nadir.

>Supplies
Capitalism finds a way. Western Power donate gear to the "right" rebels? In almost every instance, a lot of that nice gear gets sold off within a couple months, and from that point they're on the free black market and usually end up in the hands of whoever can afford them.

>Logistics
This is where they're falling short really. They wanted to make their state, but it's such a logistical burden that they're finding themselves unable to carry out the large aggressive operations which they had so much success with early on.

We are essentially saying the same thing.
It shouldn't surprise anyone that IS can operate soviet tanks because their iraqi combatants have experience with them. They are good on the ground because, before they were IS they were trained by marsoc, in COIN tactics which is why the other groups around them had a hard time routing them and they gained so much ground in the first year or so of ths campaign. They COULD operate M1s because many of IS 'fighters are ex Iraqi army.
Can we stop patting each other on the back so agressively?

Well I don't think it's logistics at this point I think it's man power desu. The Turkmen and the rest of the FSA get some western gear and training and that jazz but people don't deal with Isis much. See jund al aqsa, if you get outed fucking around with Isis it's bad fucking news. Lastly I don't think they could sustain operating western armor considering they didn't make a concerted effort to do so. An m1 is complicated and spare parts and ammo had to be a bitch and a half to find.

Let's calm down there bud, they made money selling oil to the Turks, generous donations from the Saudis/Qataris and surprisingly argicultre. They levy a tax on farms and it has been lucrative, I lost the article on it but I'll try and find it again tonight
>>
>>31747971
Agreed, IS is starting spread itself thin.
Experienced leadership is dying and jihadis are taking there place. VBIEDs and suicide bombings are being used as weapons of war, which isn't sustainable. On top of that, every civilian that dies is one that can't join their ranks. Previous commanders were able to use terror to gain recruits. Now, not so much.
>>
>>31748066
They have been using dozens of VBIEDs a day for two years now. It is one of their most effective weapons. 1 of them killed over 100 ypg outside Mosul today.
>>
>>31748167
Right, a lot of their body count recently has been due to VBIEDs, however it suggests that their fighting capacity has degraded to such that they can't sustain conventional warfare for much longer. It's effective, but telling, I think.
>>
>>31748066
Vbieds have been used the entire war pretty much. It's literally the jihadists form of an air strike. It's not like massive Suicide attacks are new. They would use them on any fortified point or large troop movement. See the jisr and kindi hospital and Aleppo prison sieges. These have been done by smaller groups and ones as large as al nusra who used 4, one right after the other to finally take of the arty college when the broke the Aleppo siege for a week

When it comes to oil I am sure they made more by selling to Assad than to Turks. At one point they controlled almost all of Syrian oil and selling to SAA was probably done through ether one middlemen or directly. Nothing stops oil, during Bosnian war oil was one thing all sides were moving and selling from start to finish. People blocked food, medicine but never oil and ammo, simply too much money in question.
>>
>>31748225
I find it amazing they are still able to put up such resistance when they are being attacked from the air so much. It is amazing their morale holds.

>>31748355
They are literally a skeleton crew. They were told to die there and take as many kafir with them as possible hence the very large number of suicide attacks, but like I said suicide bombers/vbieds are nothing new and have been used extensively. They shoot and blow up while the rest go to Syria to set up shop where things are more chaotic.

The use of vbieds is not new and does not mean anything they have been used by a wide variety of jihadi groups from day one. Isis is losing its ability to gain new fighter and its loss of man power is showing because they haven't launched a major offensive anywhere in months. That it's the most telling sign because they were always mobile and striking with force where ever you least expected and now they don't even bother with throwing men at anything other than deir ezzor

Baathi officers aren't the key players here. There was an article posted on these threads a while ago about this. ISIS military tactics owe more to Chechnya and other such conflicts. The tactics of Baathi officers related more to big, static, defence set-pieces, which isn't suited to the fast paced style of warfare ISIS was engaging in.

Still, if this is a closer estimate of the battle, i'll have to give props to ISIL for being able to smuggle in troops and weapons into the city so professionally.

Apparently there's a massive system of tunnels under the city, used to transport weapons/ personnel. ISIS is booby trapping them as they fall back.

Video is Rahman corp using a Shika in Jobar. I am used to seeing SAA Shika vids.

This shows why the Shilka is so deadly if you are on a high floor and a look into Jobar's urban warfare.

Here you sit mocking Allah subhana wa'tala with your vile copy and pastings, but He still says to you Come! you must make toba and be forgiven by Allah swt for on that day no one will answer for you but yourself, not even the Prophet Isa will ask Allah to save you so great is Allah subhana wa'tala's power and fearfulness that even the Prophet Isa who was obedient to his mother will say on that day "I won't even ask you for my mother" standing there naked to be judged before Allah.... My friend you must realize how serious this is. Allah will forgive you! But you MUST make toba. I will cry every day in fear of Allah even had he threatened to put me into the toilet for eternity, but Allah has threatened to put me into HELLFIRE for eternity. Do you know what this means friend. It is the threat for every living person if they do not make toba and repent to Allah subhana, in hell fire your skin will be made anew to feel the pain that never stops.

Citing the 800k as a measure for how discriminate/indiscriminate US bombing in is, is either misleading or dumb.

While no one has claimed that ALL, or most of the Syrian civilians were killed by the Russians.

Actually it was just the pro Russians bringing up a number that has no relevance to the discussion. As bringing up the total of civilians killed in Syrian would have been.
>>
>>31755139

BTW, vid looks like a prefect example of precision strikes.

Same targets get subsequent follow up hits, which means it's precise munition. and some secondary explosions can be spotted, which makes it likely ammunition stores were the targets of at least some of these strikes.

Is Turkey going to push towards Aleppo?
>>
Brigadier General Adel Ragaei was assassinated as he was leaving his home at Obour City suburb (near Cairo). With Liwa al-Thawra possibly claiming responsibility.

Ragaei was one of the fathers of the program to flood the tunnels from Gaza to Sinai and oversaw the execution. He was also responsible for clearing a 2km area from the border into Sinai from houses, destroying much of the Egyptian part of Rafah in the process.

No, they want to take al-Bab from ISIS to give their FSA a major town besides Azaz and foster the whole "major anti-ISIS intervention" narrative.
They also right now are trying to kick the Kurds out of the Azaz Corridor that they had seized when it was cut off by the SAA at the beginning of the year, to retake Tal Rifaat and further isolate the Afrin Canton.
Then there is still further ISIS clay to take beyond al-Bab and the major question how you deal with kurd "occupied" Manbij that has to be addressed in the near future.

Only after that there might be an option to influence the Battle for Aleppo or annoy Assad in other ways. Right now Turkey needs Russias and Syrias neutrality.

I have this bad feeling, all this was to get to aleppo from the north and everything else was just secondary

So, even if i dont really like the kurds, i really hope they kick some FSA asses and delay a possible connection with the aleppo (SAA) frontline as long as possible
Im okay with them (FSA) having al-bab. i dont give a fuck about that city. And even better, they will lose a lot of manpower to gain it, so go on, fucktards

Turkey and Russia have clearly drawn some lines where each side can go and what is allowed and what not.

Besides, these somewhat more ''moderate'' FSA have proved to be pretty shit and there is not enough turkish equipment or advisers in there yet to make any real difference.
Even the argument, that the rebels will grow too powerfull if they take too much ground is invalid, if you remember that they controlled all that during the first half of the battle of Aleppo (i think during late 2013 they had pretty much the whole province, besides regime hold western aleppo city and a couple of military bases in the south).

Of course direct turkish intervention is not something that is good for Assad and who knows what will happen in the middle to longer timespan. He better makes some progress in Aleppo in the next months (and keep praying that Russia never gets tired of Syria)

It's fascinating to see how blast waves are influenced by terrain features in flat urban environments.
You can be relatively nearby and be completely fine when the blast is deflected by concrete at the right angle or turned into paste at a great distance because the deflected wave is compressed and focussed..
