So I'm interested in having a knife made (1095 steel, g10)
The problem is so many guys I find charge 4, 500 bucks, so ideally someone who makes quality but doesn't get loads of orders so they overcharge

Anyone know of a modest knife maker?
(Also post your knife thread)
>>
...the fuck? Seriously. Just by a knife blade blank from amazon.com, some rivets, and some g10 scales. There are a MILLION guides on how to do this online. use google.

Hell, if you want something more traditional, bum around on ragnar's ragweed forge website. It looks like its from 20 years ago...but isnt that a good thing when it concerns a blacksmith?

As a cheaper option,

You could just get an Esee 3 and put some custom G10 scales on it. You get your custom look and the glorious 1095 heat treatment by Rowan.

>>
>>31731657
To clarify, i have a custom blade design i want made, not something already sold as blanks anywhere
>>
>>31731682
ah ok. that will easily be several hundred dollars then. good luck.
>>
>>31731632

Dude, you can have a knife made of 10xx. The problem with boutique makers is that they know what's up with the steel, and that is Fine Grain.

Backyard/amateur smiths don't yet know the full scape of this, so prepare for weird arguments where the other side of the coffee table really has no clue.

Go to Bladeforums and spend there actively searching for about the following two weeks on this. You can't ignore "sharpening" weirdness.

Good luck.
>>
>>31731698
Maybe, someone who's efficient(and with experience) could water jet my design, grind the edge, and slap on scales.
Bonus points for a simple leather sheath
>>
>>31731719
Yea I'm not a smith, but i know there's nuances like heat treating that one definitely wants in a blade
>>
>>31731734
*and heat treat it
>>
>>31731751
Yes, all of that comes the last.

But what Really is the pain is to find the supplier for your Completely Niche raw material.
>>
>>31732167
Easy to find on online, cheap too
>>
>>31733298
You can find 10xx steel Alloy from the next junk yard.

And then you can find that precision alloyed 10xx steel with max 2 micron grain microstructure from a less than handful of suppliers around the world.
>>
>>31731734
Ok. A water jet cutter is still going to charge 200-400 for a single piece. You have machine time, set up, media, layout and the Fuck you for bringing me such a small job charges.

Do it your self, or pay the hundreds of dollars
>>
>>31731682
I'll make your knife OP, drop your email and I'll get it done for $80
>>
>>31733807
Do you have a site or youtube or anything?
>>
>>31731632
jeff white might do it, not sure what he charges for custom work though.
>>
>>31734299
Good call anon, seems promising
>>
>>31731632
Either make it yourself or just ask some custom makers who make fixed blades around that size and price. Try R. S. Knifeworks, itll still be a few hundred but wont be 5 unless you have some stupid ass dimensions. That or find local makers. In reality, just fkn buy a factory knife. Swamp rat ratmandu or some shit idk.

>>31731661
lol TAD logo named strider 8cr13mov. so much wtf

>>31731665
ya esee is pretty good and they have a no questions asked warantee.
>>
>>31731632
Be very, very careful when picking someone for this. Unless you have a 3d model that they can copy directly its probably going to have subtle differences that will disappoint you

A different anon posted about getting something made and later posted that experience, it was close to his drawing but it just wasn't quite what he imagined

If you are handy you can get a piece of steel, grind it and send it out for a heat treat
>>
>>31734614
Nice design
>>
>>31734614
I have many quality knives, I just have a strong itch to see my idea come to life
>>
>>31731632
I'd recommend J.W. Bensinger. Look up his Facebook page. There's also his website, but he hasn't updated it in awhile.

I got a custom knife in differentially hardened 1084 with an 8 inch blade for about $350.

There's also Matt Freeman. Dude's a character (to say the least), but he makes decent stuff at affordable prices and has a very fast turnaround time.

>>
What makes you think your special snowflake design is so much better than what's available commercially?
>>
>>31734735
>>31734719

Ya, Then R.S.K. Rob will work with you. He just made an amazing knife for me (not the sketch shown, that drawing is his) He has some good work and good communications when he finds design flaws or stuff. Easy to work with. I'd post my new custom he made me (3rd custom I have from him) but it would give my identity away so instead, have a sketch of something he drew up to show his versatility.

>>31734753
A lot of designs are not produced or produced with decent quality or materials. None of the designs I use for cooking and personal use are commercially made (unless you count Busse custom shop)

I'll work for a reasonable price, just looking for experience mostly. I'm a hobby smith so not a whole lot of business experience ect.
>>
>>31731734

No one competent will do that cheaply though. You want niche bullshit you pay for niche bullshit.
>>
>>31735249
eh, its all good man. I mentor like 5 people over skype and give them challenges to go for and shit. I know how people start up. Not bad and has a lot of potential. You seem to keep yourself to a sub 3 inch blade so makes me curious what can be done in a 4.5 inch blade. Kinda seems like you enjoy neck knives so if you enjoy it, just kick it out and enjoy man. Make what you like and learn as you go.

>>31735302
Yeah I do prefer smaller blades. At this point I'm mostly struggling to keep consistent grinds because my shitty 1x30 is dying. This is one of my most recent projects. A punch dagger. The handles are still being shaped.
>>
>>31735176
When did you start? What kind of steel you use
>>
>>31735393
Consistency in grind takes time. took me years to feel the grind without using a jig. I used a jig I built for a bit. A jig is a good thing for building up muscle memory and consistent strokes. Gotta love a good swedge, just make sure the angles aren't too harsh on the swedge.
>>
>>31735426
I started around 3 years ago but didn't start really 'improving' until a year and a half ago. I use O1, 1080, W2, and 1095 primarily.
>>
>>31735283
Have you done anything bigger? Do you heat treat
>>
>>31735444
The swedge is pretty shallow. I'd never done one before and was curious.

Freehand grinding is fucking impressive. If I ever get good enough to do that it'll be a good day for me lol.
>>
>>31735473
Did you use clay for hamon?
What kind of quench oil you use?
>>
>>31735493
they are good for mitigating tip strength and adding weight to the back of larger knives (think like a kukri but the weight in the back. Similar to the sword style vlad the impaler used. Weight in the back. But what I was saying is harsh angles on the edges. A lot of people make their swedge angles harsh so that they kinda hurt or feel sharp when they are touched. I have a Michael Zeiba knife. One of his first folder attempts. I notice a lot of things wrong but one is mainly the fact that his swedge angle's edge is sharp enough to notice when touched. Probably can even strike a ferro rod on. Thats why people round out certain edges.
>>
>>31735524
Yeah I used clay, I started out with vegetable oil and experimented with peanut oil, but I eventually caved and bought parks 50. Warped 5 or 6 knives before I got the hang of it.
>>
>>31735548
Interesting to note. I guess that could also help if you're interested in sharpening the swedge instead. But most localities wouldn't let that fly if you're carrying that knife so a less harsh swedge is more often beneficial.
>>
>>31735597
Some people sharpen it but it usually is not smart (9 times out of 10) but a false edge is good. Its useful, beautiful, and has class. Whether a harpoon or swedge or whatever. Looks nice. I am saying the angles are too harsh. A good rule of thumb is literally rub your pinky up and down the spine and if it feels like itll hurt if you snag it, then round it out or do an angle on it
-
\
| Just a slight angle in it. Look at how some pocket knives use swedges

>>31735484
Yup, if anything larger I prefer an edge quench to help with flexibility before snapping. I've made a few larger blades but most of them are under 6".pic related is 5"(this pic is a screenshot but only because the pictures taken with the eBay app don't download to device lol)
>>
>>31735597
overall, a false edge, once you find it, its a perfect swedge. just matters the angle of the swedge. I got some huge swedges and some psuedo swedges like a native or spartan harsey folder

also might try tuffthumbs, tuffknives.com
he used to do customization, now mostly makes his own product

as above, no idea what he'd charge, hell you might just be better off posting on bladeforums

Haven't I shilled Calton Cutlery enough yet in these threads?

He makes extremely high performance knives in 1095 he heat treats himself to ~62 HRC and charges very reasonable prices for them.

6-12 month waiting time
