Why are fal's so expensive. I would've figured with over 2million produced from 1954 to now, it would be the same as any semi auto mil-surp rifle. Maybe I'm just bitching because I'm poor as shit

The law man does want anyone to have fun. That is why they are so expensive.

Machined receiver and import faggotry.

If you look at a PTR91, it's a stamped receiver which is made domestically and thus cuts out a lot of middlemen and expense when it comes to getting you a battle rifle.
Then there's all the cheap-ass aluminum mags that litter the world.

I know Coonan machines some FAL receivers for people, but not on any large scale, and not complete rifles.

The $89 FAL kits from Dans ammo are long gone
The $225 imbel uppers Have more than doubled in price
The $4 magazines are now $20

What happened?
Demand ate through the supply.

The only thing that's putting me off from assembling a FAL is the possibility of needing to actually cut the barrel thread if there is timing issues. And not a lot of people have the tools or knowledge to do that correctly.
Not to mention a few pretty costly specific tools just for assembling a FAL.

Can always send it in to professionals, like Arizona Weapons System, nut that's hitting $1500 mark if you get a coonan or some other good receiver + assembly fees.
At that mark, You can get DSA's mainline SA58's for a hundred or two more.

FALs are an older design that uses part of the receiver as a load bearing structure for the bolt to lock against. That means the bit between the lockup and barrel threading needs to be made of really good steel with good heat treatment, which in practical terms means the whole thing has to be made that way. Then you have to do hundreds of machining operations, using expensive machines and bits capable of cutting this steel. This takes a lot of time, expertise and expensive equipment.

An AR15 locks into a simple barrel extension, so only the barrel, bolt and a bit of the carrier are load bearing. The receiver can be made of wood or plastic. It's commonly made of aluminium, but that's still cheaper, faster and much easier to mill than ordnance grade steel.

I was thinking of selling one of my FALs. Should I wait?
