What? I thought this was where people knew about weapons? I want to hunt shit.

I practice archery for fun with a samick sage, it's a recurve bow with modular limbs. I have some 30# limbs but I can get higher poundage limbs if I ever want to hunt deer with it. It's a lot of fun, but I don't know much about hunting or compound bows. If you are 6'3" you will want a big bow.

For $500 you should be able to get a pretty nice one, not high end but usable. /k/ knows about archery but you might have to wait around a bit or try later in the evening.

$500 budget means $300 for the bow, then you'd need a release, arrows, a target bag and some other small items. You're pretty much limited to a Diamond Infinite edge if that's your budget.

It's absolutely the same thing. People that shoot compound bows and think that they have some kind of skill are fooling themselves. I grew up shooting traditional, but I am certified to teach compound as part of my job. Compound is a totally different animal, and takes less skill. If you have an expensive compound and some basic knowledge of all of the working parts, you can hit a target pretty consistently. Not true for traditional bows- way more practice is necessary to achieve a similar level of accuracy, but once you reach it, you are a better archer for it. I'm not trying to knock compounds (too much), but if you want to go that route you might as well just get a crossbow. A crossbow has more in common with a compound than a compound has with a traditional bow. That goes not only for mechanics, but shooting technique as well.

Op here, as much as bi appreciate the skill involved in recurve i really would rather have a compound. I like the idea and feel of one. As for price i just threw that out as a ballpark range. I don't want anything that is crazy expensive. Just enough to get a feel and see where it goes
