How impressive is this, really?
>>
hovering helicopters is a pain in the ass I've heard
probably harder in a chinook since it's got 2 rotors
>>
Not really impressed. China has men that can do that easily.
>>
>>31719933
i could do it
>>
>>31719933
well it's a normal part of the job but to be fair it's a very difficult and impressive job.

Landing on a landing pad technically isn't all that different.
>>
It's staggeringly impressive. I did a small amount of rotary wing training in the air force and clocked about 18 real world flight hours. Helicopters are a hitch and a half to fly, especially in mountainous terrain, especially at extremely low altitude, especially when trying to hover, and especially in a dual main prop helicopter like the CH47.
>>
>>31719975
>China has men
That's all China has.
>>
>>31719933
it's impressive, but only because flying helicopters in the first place isn't easy. before a chopper departs they hover in place for about 10 min doing final checks, literally no different then what's going on in that picture, except for what's underneath it

tl;dr yes it's impressive, but not any more so than any other hovering

nice. i thought it was going to be that story of the Vietnamese guy who rescued his family and village and hovered his chinook over the US ship at sea while they offloaded. his ditch maneuver was 10/10 too.
>>
What's more difficult, this or landing a helicopter on a moving ship in rough seas?
>>
>>31720089
>but not any moreso than any other hovering

I guess thats kinda what i was getting at. Obviously flying a military heli isnt easy, but if youre already capable of doing that then how much of a stretch would it be do to pic related

Are you retarded? It's way harder. He's not putting the full weight of the Chinook on the building because it's made of mud and sticks.
Keeping the ramp low enough to load the troopers would be insanely difficult in these circumstances.
>>
>>31719975
Right Tchang.

How many dual rotor choppers does China has again ?

OH SNAP THAT'S RIGHT : NONE.

Get the fuck out of here and call back when your country will be able to do something else than copying french designs from the 70's for their choppers.
>>
>>31719933

The fact that helicopters don't just fall out of the sky is already pretty impressive.

Now I'm confused as I thought Cantonese had an "L" sound but not an "R" sound
>>
>>31721898
there is no distinction between the two in Eastern languages
whether it's an R or L sound is contextual, but speakers are not necessarily aware of the distinction

I'd prefer a single engine help to a single engine plane over mountainous terrain, given it was just, say, a scenic flight. If I lose the engine in that plane I am pretty much SOL. Helo, I might be able to land, but the plane cant land anywhere without at least a 650x25ft clear, flat area.

It's impressive, because he's hovering with his helicopter at an angle, and they are 14,000 feet up a mountainside.

Most helicopters can barely stay in the air at that altitude.
>>
>>31719933

Very impressive. It's not super rare, both the US and RAF have been seen to do it quite a lot, but that doesn't detract from how fucking outrageously skilled a pilot has to be to pull that shit off.

Especially in those sorts of geographic conditions.

unless there are a bunch of talibs we don't see waving blankets and trying to blow the chinook over with their lungs outside of the picture

>Nguyen was now alone in the Chinook. How could he safely get on the Kirk as he wrestled with the 12-ton helicopter? He had another idea. He would attempt something that he had never tried before -- a ditch at sea. He flew the helicopter a safe distance from the Kirk and hovered for about 10 minutes as his wheels dipped in and out of the water.
Chipman watched what Nguyen did next from the deck of the Kirk.
>"This is crazy; he's taking off his clothes," Chipman thought to himself as he watched Nguyen.
>Somehow Nugyen took off his flight suit and his shoulder holster -- all while working various sticks and controls to keep the massive helicopter stationary. >One pilot who watched it said he couldn't figure out how Nguyen undressed while keeping the Chinook stationary. Nguyen then rolled the helicopter with its whirring blades to the right, away from the ship. As it began to tumble over and hit the water, he jumped into the sea.

>Mast Bumping
It can happen when you make too abrupt a turn on the cyclic. Cyclic makes you be able to move the helicopter to the left, right, forward, and rear. What happens is the rotor blades (airfoil) literally coming flying off and just the body plummets to the earth.

Blade coning is when you aren't creating enough lift via centrifugal force. The blades are bending upwards like a cone and you plummet. Once this happens you CANNOT recover blade coning. You're fucked and it is most likely fatal.

A lot of the first huey chopper pilots had trouble with mast bumping due to its design. When coming over a ridge and then due to instinct to push the cyclic forward to push the nose down the main rotor mast would collide with the main rotor cap and would literally decapitate the spinning blades from the fuselage and pilot thus killing them if too high up.
>>
>>31729800
Not a pilot but I know a few.

They have told me that rigid rotors are less susceptible to both of those phenomena, making them pretty agile in turning and overall manoeuvring.

Considering astronauts landed on the moon using a flight control and navigation system less powerful than a TI-84 calculator..

Its not that impressive.

I'd imagine most helicopters have a hover function that binds with an altimeter anyways.

What's impressive is the pilots self control. I'd be tempted to troll the guys in the back by rocking back and forth.

I agree. A pilot still needs to monitor it.

>>31736581

Yea I'm sure the military industrial complex loves it because it means more money and contracts. No kidding.
