Keep pack weight under 40 pounds and make sure equipment fits you properly other than that drink water stretch and eat balanced
>>
>>31718667
Heh yeah bit of truth here. If you ruck military style you can only delay the devastation of your knees and back.
>>
>>31718644
Go to the gym. I've found that a routine focusing on deadlifts, squats, cleans, farmer walks, and lunges will make rucking much easier.

Keep ruck weight manageable and use a good pack. Use the waistpad and chest strap. Do not regularly run with a ruck on to do any kind of "training", the impact will eventually fuck up your knees and legs if you do it regularly.

Do not do "ruck run" or "body armor run" training. It truly does not give you benefits you can't get from a gym and it will wreck your knees over the long term.

I was in the Army for 8 years and I regularly had to ruck, including an almost entire Afghan dismounted deployment in the mountains. I followed my own training advice and my knees are not fucked up.
>>
>>31719091

Not to mention the fact that ruck running is one of the most excruciating activities I've ever done.
>>
>>31719091
>the impact will eventually fuck up your knees and legs if you do it regularly.
Would it be permanent?
>>
>>31719130
It wears down the cartilage in your knees. As far as I know, that's not reversible.

I know quite a few Army friends who are pretty permanently fucked up from running with packs on in their younger days.

Clearly if you are in real combat conditions, you fucking run, but running with a ruck for training is not beneficial. If you do proper leg exercises at a gym, your legs and back will be strong and with decent cardio as well, you'll be able to run with a ruck during those emergency times.

Again, I can attest to this. I've done entire firefights with a 65+ lb ruck. You can move if you need to, you don't have to wreck your knees in training.
>>
>>31719178
This is true and good advice.

I've only been inna infantry a few years and I'm out early next year, I like running too much and one of the reasons I don't want to stay is because it can fuck your body up; particularly when my unit does retarded PT and gives no fucks about high impact. I've already had a re-occurring injury and I don't want any more.
>>
>>31719400
>>31719178
what kinds of retarded PTs in the army that can fuck your body up?
>>
>>31719434
Jogging with body armor or rucks on.

Also simply doing too high volume without appropriate rest days. The military people making these PT plans are usually crusty old timers who are too brainwashed by tradition and being moto, so they don't really get how rest days work and that there is a difference between pushing through pain and pushing that causes harm.

I've been out of the military for 3 years, and being able to exercise on my own schedule has made me stronger than I ever was in the military. I can actually go to the gym until exhaustion without holding back on fear of some retarded SNCO making me do exercises the next day.

As an example, I did a literal marathon on a weekend. An SNCO knew about it. On Monday he sprung a PT test on me because he thought it would be funny to fuck with me. Military leadership can be juvenile and physically harmful.
>>
>>31719434
Despite myths to the contrary, a lot of military leadership is dangerously underqualified and overconfident.
>>
>>31719543
>On Monday he sprung a PT test on me because he thought it would be funny to fuck with me
hahah what a piece of shit
>>
>>31719434
Since we moved to a built up shithole we were doing loaded marches and running with weighted kit, as well as other high impact stuff like stretcher races, on paved surfaces; injury rates increased correspondingly.

>>31719567
And some are willfully ignorant.

Former Usmc 0311. Had to do ruck runs all the time while in garrison. My knees are shit now. Thanks 30% disability.

I permanently fucked up my back in the military because of exhaustion and weight.

They made us march, run and jump with ruck, body armor and full equipment with no rest and some times less than 5h of sleep for a week...
For no reason other than "natural selection".

Those who had stronger articulation made it (a lot of them with injuries).
The others were thrown away like me with broken bones because of exhaustion, cartilage, herniated disc, etc...
I personally had a cracked vertebra and a pinched disc last year. I was temporarily released from military duty and transferred as an infantryman. I need to go back in 2018 to end my days of service in the infantry.

Today I have osteoarthritis and daily back pain. I'm only 22. I can again do workout and cardio but I feel that my back is fragile. I'll be back in the military and it probably will be ok but I that my body will be completely fucked up in 10 years.
>>
>>31721991
This shit really fucks with you, a 22 year old shouldn't have these types of issues. But the leadership insists on pushing and pushing the limits.

I'm only 20 and already had a neat re occuring fracture in the right Tibia just below the knee.
On our way to a 50mile ruck orienteering they made the whole platoon jump out the back of the truck and jog after it with our pack for collective punishment.

Reason:
A private forgot his bayonet in the armoury.
>>
Pretty much everyone I know who's former military has issues like this. My buddy who is an Army O-2 said he had to do a 10 mile ruck in pt shoes and now his shins are fucked up forever.

This shit is pretty discouraging as someone looking to get into infantry.
>>
Yep. Please don't ruck unless you're actually going camping or some other shit. Don't do it just because. 11B infantry here, I've got both hips and knees fucked up beyond repair.

How can a 10 miles ruck fuck up you tibias unless you have glass bones?
>>
>>31723267
what is insufficient loading and repeated damage to bone vasculature?
You know there's kind of a lot of soft tissue associated with bone right? Like all of the connective tissue where muscles connect, say up the literal entire length of your tibia?
>>
>>31723344
Yes but how can that happen juste with a 10 mile ruck ?
>>
Honestly, you don't need to workout with a ruck to be good at it.
>Three sport athlete
>Did mile in track
>Not great, but consistently under 5min
>Start doing ruck marches for ROTC
>Complete 6 miles in 54 minutes on our 4th ruck march, the over 3 were build ups and involved walking the whole time
Point is if you're in good shape and can run well, then you can ruck really well too.
As a side note I lost feeling in my big toe for like a month after that.
>>
>>31723505
I lost feeling of both big toes when I was in the army.
>>
>>31719130
Yes

t. someone who has fucked knees because of rucking in the Army
>>
>>31723267
>What is osteoarthritis
>>
>>31718644
Do warm ups, Eat healthier every day for the rest of your life, Start small and build, have a schedule, Utilize consistency to build gains, Build a routine son. maybe find someother gaymosexual on craigslist or whatever to go rucking with you so you don't get stuck innawoods when you forget a compass and cant tell what way your going at night or your car breaks down.
>>
>>31723724
It's when you claim your bones hurt to get more disability shekels
>>
>>31723571
I lost feeling in the left half of my right foot in the 3 months of marine corps boot camp. That was 4 and a half years ago and I still don't have feeling back.
>>
>>31718644
I had a drill instructor yank down on my pack at the beginning of a hump. It was pretty much dangling of my back for a few miles before they let me stop. It was incredibly exhausting and painful. So I suggest a pack with back support, hip belt, and amazing shoulder straps. Do a lot of research too. I think its a good idea bruh.
>>
>>31718644
You dont
>>
>>31722893
Did he ever forget it again?
>>
never run on hard surfaces with boots and you'll be okay in the short run. but shits fucked man. I was an 0311 for 5 years and saw way to many 20 year old with permanent knee damage. i would stay away from high impact work outs of any kind if i had a choice in it.

Will doing deadlifts help me with my gunbelt as a LEO?
>>
>>31718644
don't ruck. I was in a light unit that specialized in demo. and long range nav .we moved with 70-140 lbs depending on aux. equipment. There weren't a lot of light units that moved or navigated better than us. I have spinal arthritis and multiple bulges in spine. If you're ever in the shit/ life threatening need to do long movements, just do it. And plan for recovery for your feet which will probably shed tissue for a few days from being soft. For training just squat, run, and do stairs, don't ruck w/ weight.
>>

you dont. it's a stupid concept

College ROTCfag here.

I've been doing 3-4 mile rucks with a 35lbs pack every couple days for a little while now.

I feel no damage, pain, etc...

Should I stop or is the "you'll blow out your knees" meme more something that happens when you're regularly pushed past what you should be doing?
>>
>>31725765
You'll get way more by running 5 days a week than rucking 3 days a week.
>>
>>31719130
Absolutely. Once the cartilage is gone, it's gone for good. We did not evolve to carry heavy shit on our backs so it fucks us up long term.
>>
>>31725824
We already do 5 day a week PT.
I just slow ruck (barely meet standard) 2-3 times a week in the evenings because it's something easy to do while listening to music.

Is it like an eventual breakdown thing and your knees are slowly worn away or is it something that can be avoided if done in moderation?

My dad has no cartilage in his knees after 27 years in the Army but I assumed that was just because of the retarded 1980's/1990's "power through all injuries" mentality.
>>
>>31725867
I did pt 5 days a week too. I can bet you're only running 2-3 days out of that 5.
>>
If you take omega 3 pills (aka fish pills) you can reduce the effects of arthritis, somehow.
>>
>>31725867
Ruck marches will always wear away at cartilage. You can reduce the wear with proper form and not carrying extreme weights. 35lbs is fine.
>>
Cartilage can be replaced with surgery.
>>
>>31726371
Surgery brings on alot of other problems. Stop being so eager to hit the surgery trigger.
>>
>>31718644
get a REALLY good and comfy pair of boots. Hiking style if you can. I can not stress this enough. don't skimp out on them because of price. when you do get them, make sure they are TIGHT on the foot. I.E. I normally wear a size 9.5 for shoes. for boots for rucking, I where a 8 in summer and 8.5 in winter.

reason being, is that any movement of your foot in your boot will cause blistering.

also, get good socks.

when rucking with a pack, where it tight to the body. almost to the point where it starts digging into your armpits. if you have a cross strap to connect the two straps across your chest, FUCKING USE IT. keep anything heavy preferably high in the pack and close to your back as possible.

eat pasta the night before, it helps.

carry plenty of water and Jolly ranchers/starburst/some kind of solid candy that you can suck on that has sugar. it helps.

start off small. I.E. start at 1 mile. then move to 2 miles, then 3, etc.

on long rucks, CHANGE YOUR FUCKING SOCKS REGULARLY!!!!!!!!!!!! And work your way up with the weight as well. don't start off with a 80lb ruck right off the bat. start off with no ruck, then 15lb, 30lb, 40lb, etc

also keep Motrin and Moleskin in your pack, just in case.

Standard is a minimum of 4 miles per hour OR 1 mile every 15 minute.

Also, You need to make sure you are properly Hydrated before each ruck.
>>
>>31719178
thank you for your cervix
>>
>>31718644
Using your body wears on it, you might improve but it comes at a cost. It happens to everyone. It's not realistic to think
>I'm going to do this with no consequences

>>
>>31729051
You shouldn't run while carrying weights. The long term consequences of no exercise at all are much much worse, though.
>>
>>31718667

>>
>>31729051
