to be fair, those who die in the flash will be much happier than those who may survive in shelters or by fair luck, considering the following nuclear winter and the lethal increase in atmospheric radiation, that will inevitable, but very slowly, poison and kill everything in Earth, in the following years, then decades, centuries and millennia, what we all can agree, is much longer than the time one can spend inside a nuclear shelter.

Need some help fellas. It is feeling more and more like shit is going to go down. Im looking to arm myself but not really sure what I should be looking for. Was hoping for some advice on a rifle and handgun purchase.

I would like them to be hardier weapons that can go through some shit and keep firing.

Something that uses the most widely available ammo. By this I mean, in times of scarcity which rounds are still likely to be available. I have been asking around and I have been told to go with Nato rounds for the rifle and 9mm rounds for the handgun. Does that makes sense to ya'll or should i be looking at a different calibers.

Nothing super advanced as I am a novice.

I would prefer they not be super expensive but I am def willing to spend if that is what it takes to get a reliable weapon.

Something that does not jam easily.

So far I have been told to get an AR-15 for the rifle, but have not found a consensus on the handgun. I was also told to by a lower reciever and upper reciever instead of just buying the AR out right as it is much cheaper that way.

Any info/advice would be appreciated. Stay safe out there anons.

No. Life will adapt and nuclear winter is probably even not going to happen. Humans will be struggling to survive, but that's been reality for the most of our species' existence.

Try to live as long as possible.

A friend who had to deal with this shit during the cold war and always being in a key strategic nuke target just told me "Bunkers and shit are cool, but if they launch and it lands somewhat close, you're fucked. Even if you're safe from the blast and radiation, you'll fucking go mad waiting for it to be safe to go out. The only survivors of the Mesozoic ending strike had to be on the other hemisphere.

Bolides > Nukes any day
>>
air bursts don't leave residual radiation and dumb bombs are obsolete. The real threat is terrorists and rogue states using portable fission bombs for targeted attacks. The whole nuclear winter bullshit only happens in the MAD scenario where a thousand get dropped on land targets and that's pointless now because the next major conflict is going to be over resources. That said I'm fucking everything that moves until my nuts rot off.

tl;dr people still want the land after they kill the people on it
if nukes are used, it is to accomplish the goal of completely reking your opponent
if your opponent is completely rekt, their land is there for the taking
if their land is there for the taking, you don't want it to be an irradiated, inhospitable shithole
if you don't want the land to be an irradiated, inhospitable shithole, you use airburst nukes to minimize fallout and maximize destruction

in Chernobyl, they drained way too much cooling water from the reactor core to see what would happen if such occurred unexpectedly. They realised the core temperature rose far too quickly, and pumped all the cooling water back into the reactor. At that point though it was too late, and they dropped the control rods, whose graphite tips spiked the nuclear reaction one more time (bad design)
>thiswastoomuch.jpg
The core begann to melt, and all the cooling water inside the reactor turned to steam within seconds. The immense pressure of the expanding steam just blew the 1000 tons heavy reactor cover through the machine hall roof. It was NOT a nuclear explosion, and it did NOT result in a typical mushroom cloud either, think more of a steam boiler explosion, due to the heat of the core meltdown

I'd half prefer an alien invasion to a nuclear war.

Seriously. At least I'd have one life-long question answered.

Although real aliens needing use of the earth would have ridiculously potent, almost god-like technology. They can probably make all 7,000,000,000 people (including the ones hiding in bunkers deep underground) disintegrate in a nanosecond while leaving everything else pristine and untouched.

Anywhere else on the planet, you'd probably want an AK.

He's right you know. Nuclear yields > 50MT release most of their energy into space, thus not making a very efficient weapon of destruction. Both the US and the Soviets figured that out in the late 50ies/ early 60ies, and began producing more, but smaller warheads. It's much more effective if you throw 3-5 200KT nukes at a city than if you choose one single 50MT. Also, it's easier to intercept one missile than it is with 3-5 separate
