One of the plates I bought is a lightweight UHMWPE/Ceramic hybrid, rated III"""""+""""". It is supposed to stop M855, unlike typical UHMWPE plates.

fwiw I've personally seen testing where someone shot an ar500 chest plate at 10yds with n855a1 from a 16" barrel and then the Ceramic Hybrid plate. It punched straight through the AR500 and was stopped by the ceramic hybrid.

A trial at the United States Court of Federal Claims was held in Washington, D.C., last year, commencing on June 23, 2014, and ending on July 8, 2014. The court found the government’s M855A1 ammunition design did infringe on Liberty’s patent. The presiding judge in the case, Charles F. Lettow, awarded $15,617,533.68 in damages to to Liberty Ammunition, which paid for the rounds the government had already made and supplied to soldiers. Also, Lettow awarded to Liberty a 1.4-cent-per-round royalty through October 20, 2027.

Just read the article on this and m855a1. I imagine with the increased wear we'll see an M4a1 at some point in the near future. Possibly an M17 if they can't fix it with alloy/redesign of the bolts, would give them an equally good reason to go back to a .30 round for those wall punching holes.
