Maybe I'm being an idiot here, but...

It seems like it's popular for people to choose a weapon caliber based on what the police carry, or what the military carries, or whatever for purposes of scavenging their ammo...

But if you have the opportunity to scavenge somebody's ammo, isn't it just goddamn likely that their weapon is going to be there, too? So... You could just take their weapons along with the associated ammo?

What I'm getting at is that this is a stupid way to choose your caliber right? Isn't it best to just get what you like best & maintain a reasonable stockpile? I use 5.56 and 9mm, but just for cost, current availability, and efficiency.

Mostly this. I lean towards a 2 month supply of normal foods and a 6-18 month supply of basic foods (rice and beans) the harder part is water supplies and purification. Also plan for your climate disasters hurricane blizzard earthquake race riots etc. But short of a Katrina level event a month is pushing the edges of likely problems elapsed time

Well if you don't know how to field zero or laser boresight a rifle it wouldn't be as effective an option but yeah you do raise an overlooked point. It is more convenient to have most weapons using the same ammo especially if you are in a larger group but it is not a necessity

Debatably. The way I look at it is I'd rather have a weapon that I'm familiar with. Battlefield pickup invites all sorts of unwanted variables, both with regards to familiarity and state of (dis)repair.

Its where panic hits. The actual shit would be more central to the city. If anything you're better off bunkering down in the burbs because errybody is gonna try to gtfo, you can then help yourself to any supplies left behind

You actually raise a great point. At the moment it happens, you will never find ammo available for sale, like a panic but much much worse. While it's happening, ammo will be guarded by all who use it, so the only way you're going to find it is around dead guys, and dead guys should have their weapons on them.

the only thing that matters with ammo is price (and obviously effectiveness). if you save 2000 rounds of 9mm for $500, you're more prepared than saving 1000 rounds of .40 for the same price (estimating, I know it's probably very innacurate). if shit actually hits the fan, it's always better to have more ammo than to rely on availability of the ammo because you don't want to trade for ammo after shtf. after shtf you'd want to stay inside and make your house harder to break into and defend it, there's no reason to carry everything you have around unless you want to be mugged.

get lots of ammo, food, and water. keep valuable items like toilet paper, tobacco, porn, gold, lighters, etc. (anything that people would pay a lot for after shtf)

keep lots of spare clothing, and make your house look as unappealing as possible to not get robbed.

Also a generally more common round and not too terrible to reload so overall for pistol ammo I support the 9. Shotgun is a gimme for 12 ga. And rifle is a toss up. Urban to suburban 5.56/223 rural to isolated I would say 308 or 30.06

Do you know how in STALKER a lot of people would after a firefight take all the weapons on the field and stash them in a container for later use (such as parts or trading)? Making a stash of scavenged weapons is a good investment of time should the world ever come to that.

Also a reason why after real firefights and skirmishes the winning side would collect all the weapons and POWs. Hence why the Israelis have such a large stash of soviet era weapons.
