How relevant is this book to modern warfare?
>>
Yes.
>>
Penis
>>
>>31702368
War. Has changed.
>>
>>31702368
Good conceptual refrence. It's like the bible, if you can relate it to modern terms, situations, and context, then it's a great guide.
>>
>>31702669
I agree
>>
>when the enemy is seen, they can be shooted

If you actually read the quotes it's kinda common sense.
>>
>>31702368
Basically there is a reason this has survived so long. (I wanna say 4,000+ years?)
>>
>>31702368

So long as you are fighting humans, The Art of War will be relevant. Its concepts are universal.
>>
>>31702697
Or has it?
>>
>>31702800
This. A lot of it boils down to
>don't be a fucking retard
>never do what your enemy expects
>use absolutely every advantage available to you
>>
>>31702697
But war NEVER changes.
>>
>>31702368
Its as relevant as How To Win Friends and Influence People is to the business world
it's taught by anyone and everyone to the point of it being standard fare
>>
I've read it. It's all pretty much common sense if you have half a brain and know anything at all about military strategy and tactics.
>>
>>31705141
It's like knowing that the earth is round. You only knew it because of the wealth of info you got in modern world. Things that is obvious to you might be obscure to ancient people
>>
>>31702368
I dare say its a must read for civillian pleb when entering service.

Well i guess no goverments want their people to be smarter than them.
>>
>>31702368
its basic hey "general" feed your troops. hey "general" fire is hot. hey "general" your troops have feefees. deffinatly worth a read. get it as books on cd/mp3 and leave in your car.
>>
>>31702837
So what you're saying is that the principles outlined in The Art of War will be useless to us when the war against the aliums begins?
>>
>It's all common sense
>Everyone breaks the rules all the time
>>
>>31702800
>>31702881
>>31705141
Well, bullets come out from gun is also common sense yet people muzzle sweep and ND all the time.

I think it's more about remembering and realizing the importance of those common sense?
>>
>Political leaders should not interfere with the generals
>Wars should be won as quickly as possible
>Long conflicts drain a nation's resources
Really fires those neurons.
>>
>>31702368
They should re-title this book 'no fucking shit: the duh chronicles' everything sun tzu says is shit you would logically think of when going to war such as: having the element of surprise is good, having a prepared well rested army is also good. When people try to brag about how brainy they are because they've read this I just want to stab them
>>
>>31705718
It's a real thinker
>>
>>31702368
I prefer the version of this where it's an audiobook read by a powerful-sounding black man.

Like James Earl Jones.
>>
>>31702881
And to behead people who fuck around on rehearsals.
>>
>>31702368
No. This book and tzu's dog shit strategies are dated as fuck.
>>
>>31705736
the reason it's so obvious is because of this book you fucking moron.
>>
>>31702368
No
Drone the sandniggers to protect the petrodollar
>>
>>31705106
THIS.

btw to thise who hadnt read the HTWFAIP book it really changed how i deal with my job/kids/life in general. its really good they have free PDFs now everywhere online

Art of War is also good it has lots of ancient wisdom that can be applied to literally anything if you actually can understand the language.

>If you actually read the quotes it's kinda common sense.
You should listen to how fucking normies think of war and military strategy. A lot of things you thought was common sense isn't because you lurk here and are, at worst, an armchair general.
>>
>>31705718
>Political leaders should not interfere with the generals
This is really not obvious to the uninitiated.
>>
Chinese cannot into war.
>>
>>31702881
But then the enemy will expect you to do what they think you think they're expecting you to do, so the unexpected becomes the expected

It's a very good read and the core ideas still hold up well, but not necessarily in the exact way they were expressed inside the book.

John Minford's translation is the best imo. Captures the laconic style of classical Chinese.
>>
>>31702368
he said you should always give the enemy a escape rote so you don't back them into a corner and stop which might make them fight harder

most militery guys say block the enemies escape route first

so you got a contridiction

Because the best time to hit an enemy is when he's running away.
>>
>>31708251

wrong, they are blocking the supply route = escape route
>>
>>31708278
I wasn't trying to be clever, you fool.
>>
>>31705691
as a person whose only job is to stop people from doing retarded things that will get them maimed or killed, I am qualified to say that people will often go out of their way to do something retarded that is explicitly forbidden that will get them maimed or killed.
the book is good in a way a manual is good. basically don't do risky shit and be responsible, if you are the kind of person that thinks 50/50 odds are good, then you may benefit from reading this if you take it to heart.

50/50 are shit odds btw.
>>
>>31705661
Some of it is psychological in the art of war. You would have to know that ayy lmaos will react the same way humans would, and thats a dangerous assumption
>>
Its not relevant to warfare, nor it never was. Its relevant to human nature, and that never changes.
>>
>>31702368
Are there any good guides to modern warfare that are as comprehensive as "The Art of War"?
>>
>>31708550
you're still a dullard
>>
the book of five rings is a better read, and so is the tao te ching
>>
>>31708288

are those good guys or bad guys?
>>
>>31708673
good question, anon.
>>
>>31708624

So long as the ayys don't display immunity to basic tactics like the use of fire I I think most of it would still be viable
>>
>>31708651
So are you
>>
>>31708673
Dead guys.
>>
>>31708673
Depends who you ask. To me they're bad guys.
>>
>>31702368
>beat the enemy before engaging the book
still good, it shouldn't be taken literally tho.
>>
it's mostly an idiots guide to grand strategy. It's relevant as long as warfare stays on the physical.

Essentially a ching chong analog to De Re Militari, written by Vegetius. Though The Art of War gets a lot more press in the modern era because of the mystification of the Orient the west has been tangoing with since the Indo-Europeans first navigated the Mediterranean.
>>

>muh common sense
No, if it was that simple, then there would be no need for the book.

>Vegetius based his treatise on descriptions of Roman armies, especially those of the mid to late Republic. As G.R. Watson observes, Vegetius' Epitoma "is the only ancient manual of Roman military institutions to have survived intact." Despite this, Watson is dubious of its value, for he "was neither a historian nor a soldier: his work is a compilation carelessly constructed from material of all ages, a congeries of inconsistencies."
Wew, lad!

>>31708251
The 'golden bridge' theory was popular in the ancient world. Pursuing an enemy was almost as costly to you as it was to them. It was only in the Napoleonic era when it fell out of vogue.

>>31710436
>implying common sense is common

>G.R Watson
>only publication is a book on roman soldiers
>otherwise get shit on some ausfag cricket player

>Vegetius emphasized things such as training of soldiers as a disciplined force, orderly strategy, maintenance of supply lines and logistics, quality leadership and use of tactics and even deceit to ensure advantage over the opposition. He was concerned about selection of good soldiers and recommended hard training of at least four months before the soldier was accepted into the ranks. The leader of the army (dux or duke) had to take care of the men under his command and keep himself informed about the movements of the enemy to gain advantage in the battle.

>De Re Militari became a military guide in the Middle Ages. Even after the introduction of gunpowder to Europe, it was carried by general officers and their staffs as a field guide to methods. Friends and subordinates customarily presented embellished copies as gifts to leaders. It went on into the 18th and 19th centuries as a source of policy and strategy to the major states of Europe. In that sense De Re Militari is a projection of Roman civilization into modern times and a continuation of its influence on its cultural descendants.

Man, ancient man were so fucking stupid, they didn't think the earth was round and that the earth was at center of the solar system. Like, common fucking sense, dude.
>>
>>31710529
Plenty of them thought the earth was round though. They just didn't know what was on the other side.
>>
>>31708039
They fell behind due to in-fighting and lolcommunism and let's be honest here, the Mongols were a force to be reckoned with, barring violent storms.
>>
>Hey guise, it's all common sense!!!!
>I've read 3 total quotes from the whole book!
congratulations, you stupid pieces of shit, you've managed to agree with some motivational posters made from the works.

Now try reading the books, fucking idiots.
>>
>>31708251
When I was in, we were taught to leave an illusion of an escape route.
In reality the route is being covered with MG s.

Storm a building fighting from top floors going down.
Let them run out the doors on the first floor where the heavy guns are waiting to rip them apart outside.
>>
>>31702800
It really is. It reminds me of reading fortunes or horoscopes. Vague, common sense shit that can apply to anything

Very. It's focus on the psychology of war is as relevant now as it was when Sun Tzu wrote it
>>
>>31708251
It doesn't have to be a physical block. Inducing surrender works just as well. And really it is a remark about how breaking morale is more important than inflicting casualties.

Read it in College, was not impressed. consider suicide, shitposter.
>>
It is really fucking basic stuff. It is famous because it is the oldest surviving book.
>>
>>31710698
Clausewitz came almost 2000 years after Sun Tzu. That's like going to /sci/ and saying that Newton's a pleb compared to Einstein.
>>
>>31708251
Ancient battles are about who routs first most of the time. If you cant run you stand and fight.

Honestly this is still applicable today when fighting actual territory wars. It doesn't apply to fighting insurgencies though.
>>
>>31708251
This was a favored tactic of the Mongols anon to surround an enemy army with your horse archers leaving an obvious gap. Often times the gap led to a marsh or a hill or other natural feature which made slaughtering the routed troops very easy.
>>
>>31710732

I don't give half a shit what you read, cause it's clear you wouldn't be able to survive a light adventure with Winnie the Pooh, much less a novelization of King Lear.
