So I'm looking to get my first raifu and I have been thinking about a Yugoslavian SKS. Would that be a good choice or should I go a different route? Also if SKS, what is a decent price range I should look out for.

Just go buy an AR.
>>
Those Yugo SKS rifles that Classic Firearms has are great. You can shoot cheap Russian steel case ammo in them. Buy one now.
>>
>>31690469
Do you live in Canada? Get it for sure.
Do you live in the USA? Consider an AK instead or an AR.
>>
>>31690511
Is there a specific type of AK or no?
>>
>>31690625
I'll be completely honest, I don't know which models should be preferred over others.
When you can take an AK which is a couple hundred more than an SKS you may as well.
>>
>>31690469
The sks is a great utility rifle go for it OP. Just remember to clean the gas shutoff valve on that thing if you shoot corrosive
>>
>>31690841
What is corrosive?
>>
Honestly mi amigo? Get a 30-30 lever action, or a bolt gun of some kind, or a semi auto hunting rifle/.22. Why go SKS? Why go AK/AR for a first rifle?

You planning on going into a warzone? You gonna operate? Have you ever fired a rifle? Do you know how to care for an old ass POS gun that every nation on the planet has replaced?

Do you want to be stuck using bullshit corrosive ammo? Do you want to have to order ammo and pick it up at your fun store or do you want to be able to just pop in and stock up?

Are you going to be hunting, or is it just a range toy?

The only reason I can think for owning an SKS is if you just want one for the fun of it, the history, or because you're a slavaboo

AK/AR make more sense, but still I find it kind of pointless, especially for a first rifle. I don't even completely understand why people want them for SHTF unless they are planning on being in active combat situations, which you shouldn't be. Your plan should be to avoid any and all conflict as best you possibly can. I guess if you DID end up being in some kind of gun fight it would have its purpose, but you shouldn't be gun fighting anybody. At best you should pop a few rounds off to let them know you aren't afraid to defend yourself and be running the fuck away

Any other reason and pretty much anything else is better. /k/ will fill you full of bullshit and make you think you need an AR/AK, a plate carrier, two-way radios, 5-10 mags and $100 "tactical" 5.11 pants just to go shoot at beer cans in the woods. These people are bored and have too much money and too little to do with it, so they blow it all on unnecessary bullshit.
>>
>>31690971
all military surplus 7.62x39 is corrosive. but don't worry, it will be labeled as such when you buy it 99% of the time. when in doubt, google the headstamp.
>>
>>31690980
I can't speak for OP, but honestly getting a low caliber rifle is just a waste of money if you've ever shot before. Sure, a 22 is fine for someone who has never shot in their life, but if you are only willing to buy one rifle, you might as well get one chambered in a fun round, which the SKS has.
It's also why the mosin is still a GOAT first rifle
>>
>>31691035
What does GOAT stand for?
>>
>>31690980
SKS is a spectacular first rifle if you can find one for under $350

unfortunately since their prices are shot up, I agree it's not the best choice for exactly that reason.

>>
>>31691056
Greatest of all time
>>
>>31690980
7.62x39 is a really common round in most places. In some areas, it's literally more common than 30-30 or .22 because of all the surplus and preppers hoarding all the .22 they can get their grubby hands on.
>>
>>31690971
It's usually milsurp ammo that uses a specific type of primer that rust your gun from the inside out if it is not cleaned.

>>31690980
What's wrong with semi autos? They are fun. 7.62x39 is everywhere including Wal-Mart. Besides I think the SKS makes a great first rifle. It is in an intermediate calibre so he won't develop a flinch. And if he gets stuck in a home defense situation it beats the he'll out of a bolt gun.

I can't believe this pic hasn't been posted yet.

Yes, it would be a nice rifle, as long as you've shot guns before it would suit you just fine. I'm doing the same as soon as I get my new jewsy cuck card.

If not, get a 10/22.
>>
>>31690625
RAS-47

American made super-AK, and by super I mean better machining, better metals, and a thicker plate used in the stamped parts.
>>
I'm done being an asshole about it and I genuinely need to know- assuming we're going to be adults and stop acting like we're still using 2005 prices, and you're in the US (I get it for leaf niggers) what's the actual point of getting an SKS for a practical rifle when the AK already exists
>>
>>31690469
>capacity of a shitty battle rifle
>power of a assault rifle

Kys
>>
>>31691073
>Preppers
>hoarding .22LR

For what purpose? It's a useless round outside of varmit plinking.
>>
>>31691080

Nothing wrong with semi auto at all, I actually suggested it. I would just go with a more modern rifle, and one that's geared more towards accuracy/hunting than removing kebabs/fascists. It just seems more practical.

But I might just be a fudd. I grew up hunting and fishing with my gramps. Old folks usually really know what's up. I learned to shoot on Remington 700 with irons and wouldn't have it any other way. I actually owned a yugo SKS for a while. Great rifle, not knocking it all, I just think there are more practical choices available.
>>
>>31691130
The RAS47 is a terrible choice of an AK..... Cast trunions are a no go man. If OP wants an AK he should get a Wasr or NPAP we are not trying to KB the poor kid
>>
>>31691163
I think it's literally a meme, in the most literal sense. Someone, somewhere said it was a good round for shtf situations (At least it's light), and because it was cheap and common, many preppers started building huge stockpiles of it. It's gotten to the point where a lot of places have strict box-per-customer purchase limits to avoid someone coming in and buying every last round in the shop as soon as a shipment arrives.
>>
>>31691080
>>31691073

And I guess the ammo thing varies greatly depending on where you live. I've never seen 7.62x39 anywhere, especially not wal-mart, here in NE Tennessee. .22, .308, 30-06 etc are everywhere there. We don't even have the 22 ammo limits here like I see elsewhere.
>>
>>31691156
There is nothing wrong with the SKS.

Especially when you mod them.

>all the delicious new mods and kits popping up for them because everyone and their dog has one

>5/75rd drum mags available (yes, that 5 is where the pin goes in Canada).

Even when you've moved on, owning a .22 you can occasionally bring out and plink around with all day for just $5-10 in ammo costs is both fun and beneficial for you as a shooter. Unless you're already highly experienced, it's often quite beneficial to change it up and shoot something that you can relax with. It will help with flinching/anticipation issues.

And, yknow, shooting a lot more because cheap.

It's a built-for-export Norinco (already not a good SKS) with a ton of reliability issues introduced by the workarounds needed to get it to take AK mags.

It was nigger-rigged in the factory but they use the same goddamm method Bubba uses in his garage.

Duckbills are fucking garbage but they're superior to SKSs modded to take AK mags.

If you want higher capacity, get a Chinese 20-round fixed mag. If you want detachable magazines just buy a fucking AK or AR because you're not saving any money buying an SKS in 2016 then making it shittier by trying to alter its functionality.

Yugoslav guns tend to be overbuilt and they don't chrome the bores.

That said Zastava makes good shit and >>31691600 is a retard.

Although Yugos with grenade spouts look disgusting and have a weird balance due to the extra weight on the barrel compared to SKSs without it, including Yugos without it (which exist and are excellent rifles).

If you can find a Chinese type 56 in decent shape (NOT a Norinco, there's a difference!) it's better than a Yugo. Russian guns at this point cost nore than decent AKs.

Question, If i wanted to do a full project overhaul of an SKS, to practice my gunsmithing skills, would a yugo be the best option? Im thinking of re-barreling with a heavier profile and lengthening the gas system, swapping the bayonet for an RPK bipod or something similar, maybe adding an AK or SVD optic rail optic rail all while trying to keep the overall aesthetic. will also be converting to 6.5 grendel.
I would rather not do this to a Tula, but do yugo's have any weird things going on with them that other rifles don't? say compared to a milled chink sks?
>>
>>31690469
I got a chink one.

I love it, but I wouldn't use it for fighting like it was meant for. Its heavy as shit.

I do love its aesthetics. However the chink one doesn't scratch that as well as a russian. Russian ones look beautiful.
>>
>>31690469
Nothing wrong with it at all. The sks is a really neat and trusty rifle. Stripper clips are also a really convenient way to carry ammo in pockets etc comfortably.
The longer sight radius is nice too.
>>31691123
Buying a 22lr has been almost a waste of money since 2012, or since cheap shooting 22cal pellet rifles allowed you to plink with decent power, without the downsides of a real firearm like noise and restrictions on where you use it.
>>

Shot my early 60s chinaman SKS for the first time today, finally. Stripped down and de-cosmo'd, refinished stock because it was garbage and it has little to no historic value despite being C&R (unless you think border skirmishes with Poos as important). Trigger was surprisingly decent and the sights were right on.

I's handy as shit, though heavy. Going to serve as my hog hunting gun.

SKS is great and honest to god if you can get a decent one for about tree fiddy, you're doing fine.
>>
If you're going for an SKS, get a Russian version if you can. Romanian and Yugoslavian versions are good alternatives from what I've heard.

If you want an AK, I've heard great things about the newer WASR-10's.

If you want am AR, get an M&P-15.
>>
Yugos are heavier because they were built to fire a hotter load than what the original SKS was designed for. Track down a reloader that will press you some hot 7.62x39 and you will see a HUGE difference in accuracy over the other variants. Also, the barrels weren't chromed because they didn't have the resources to do it. Just clean the rifle after you use it.

My only suggestion if you get an SKS is to get a safety firing pin.
>>
>>31703944
And my suggestion for everyone with the standard pin is to always remove your firing pin and jiggle it a little before taking it to the range. It's piss easy to take out and put back in and you can literally hear the free-floating pin move if it's not stuck. And if it's not stuck, it won't slam fire.

SKS is a wonderful rifle! Even when you move on to bigger and better things, you'll be happy you have your SKS in the safe. They're great guns! Reasonably priced, common ammo, solid caliber, semi auto, and essentially ban-proof since they look so fuddy. They'll eat steel case ammo all day long so they're cheap to plink with to boot. I've had a few over the years and every time I sell one I regret it and end up buying another. Pic related is never getting sold. Though. That's my beautiful Soviet baby.

Snag a Yugo, they're cheap and plentiful right now, look cool with the grenade launcher, and the lack of a chrome lined barrel is meaningless if you're not shooting corrosive ammo, which you shouldn't be anyway.
>>
>>31708987
You forgot the diehard reliability. About 1000 rounds of Czech surplus, and I only had one malfunction which I entirely blame on the Tapco mag. It was just a failure to eject anyways, to a rack of the bolt and I was good to go. The reason I had a Tapco mag was because my SKS was pinned to 10 rounds due to Canadian law, and the shitty way in which it was pinned with was a literal pin of metal being WELDED onto the bar that connected to the follower. The weld weakened the bar, somehow it got stuck, and in wrenching the baseplate open, the bar broke, rendering the original mag useless. I tried my best to find a welder to fix it for me but eventually I just gave up and got a Tapco mag. That was not a fault of the rifle, but rather, the fault of shitty Liberal laws as well as a shitty method of capping the magazine. Sure it was unnoticeable from the outside, which was nice, but it weakened the design and lead to the mag breaking.

Anyways, they're still amazing rifles, and I don't think any collection of firearms is complete without one, whether it be Russian, Chinese, Yugo, or one of the many other variants available.
>>
I'm on the fence about an SKS. The shop/range down the street has a Yugo at $450 right now. I'm noguns for about a year but just moved within walking distance to the nicest range and shop I've seen. no one answered in the qtddtot thread so asking here: Recently was gifted a sks from my dad, he bought it in the 90s when they were dirt fucking cheap, put a new stock on it and took the mag out to have removable mags, he didn't do any modification of parts, just new stock and removable mags. I like the look of an original sks, so swapped stocks for a wood one, and put back in a factory 10 round mag. Now the bolt doesn't stay open like it should, or sometimes it stays open and doesnt close like it should. Whats going on and how do I fix this? If it helps its a norinco sks, and I'm pretty sure a yugo stock and mag, there was no issue putting it together though

post a picture of the magwell from the top with the bolt held or locked back and empty

Is it just a shitty mag?

It's going to be really hard for anyone to figure out WTF is going on just from pictures. Take the action out of the stock, verify the problem is gone, and then put it back in to verify it's still happening. Look for places where the wood is binding up the metal and then maybe to a bit of fine hand filing. Barring all else, have a gunsmith look at it.

Sounds like a problem with the elevator keeping your slide back (or not)

I think what it could be, is the mag isn't pushing up the bho, or the bho is just stuck because its not moving, but I can slide it up and down to manually hold the bolt or unlock it, if it is the bho, how can I fix this?

>fun is measured in recoil
>the only use for a gun is fun
a .22 is still the best starter gun if for no other reason than the amount of practice you can get for almost nothing.

sounds like the bho tab is getting stuck or the magazine spring is worn out. its literally just a little tab that slides up when pushed on by the magazine spring. try dropping the magazine and see if it slides up and down freely. if it doesnt want to slide up, there might be something its stuck on. it might be easiest to just remove and reinstall the magazine. take a look at the tab after youve removed the magazine and see if theres anything blocking it.

Why isn't there an /sks/ general on /k/? Can we get one going?

Serious question.
>>
Bought a Yugo with a 20 round tapco magazine already on it and missing a bayonet a few years ago. I've since bought an original fixed magazine and one day when i can bother to remember to order a bayonet assembly, i'll get one.

However, i've yet to have any issues with the magazine (except with hollowpoints for some reason, only ever FTFs were with hollowpoints) even got a few more when they were cheap.

Shot a friends WASR and it felt like it was made for a chinese peasant boy, did not like shooting it at all.

I think i'll keep my SKS as my dedicated 7.62x39 gun. might get an Arsenal SAM rifle if i want a 5.45 gun though.

They are the only continual communication my stay-at-home NEET self craves. So should I buy an AR with my birthday money then?

I bought one of these a few months ago. My stock was a little bit more beat up than the pictures.
