If a rifle is machined without a stick and under 26 inches it is a pistol.

You can reconfigure a pistol into a rifle provided the rifle configuration doesn't violate the NFA, and then turn it back into a pistol.

You can fill out that AOW paperwork, but I believe it becomes an SBR if you have a stock. You may be able to throw on an arm brace though
