What's wrong with the notion of carrying a sword into battle in modern combat? Not a full claymore, but maybe something more spatha or long sword-like. Even a saber would do. I would imagine with modern machining and metallurgy, it wouldn't be hard to come up with a kind of a light weight alternative to the old stumpy little four inch combat cuck knife or an memeyonet on the end of your M4.

Muslims still carry blades to behead the infidel. Why can't we bring a sword with us even in a ceremonial capacity to raise morale, or remove kebab?

Well, it's got more reach on it than your average pig-sticker, and it's not like half the shit in your ruck will ever get used.
>>
>>31641502
If someone gets into the sort of situation where they need to use one it's normally just easier to club the shit out of the enemy with whatever's handy.

I was actually think about this the other day, If we ever go back to war with the Norks and they don't have someone to supply them with ammo, would a longsword help in the inevitable mass wave bayonet charge? Considering they don't issue bayonets anymore I would think with would be better then a shovel or a helmet or your empty rifle alone. Medieval and Renaissance/Napoleonic Treatises have loads of passages about a swordsmen (Saber in particular) defending oneself against an opponent with a bayonet.

Ontario makes a 22" machete with a knuckle guard.
Cold Steel has a bunch of machetes ranging from a 14" smatchet to a 22" 1917 cutlass.

>would a longsword help in the inevitable mass wave bayonet charge?
Not without the accompanying armor.
>>
>>31641614
See, that's what I'm talking about. A nice little machete, presumably with a thrusting tip at the end, would be sufficient.
>>
>>31641620
Not even remotely true. Most Infantrymen were not knights in full harness and they fared just fine.

Swords aren't being phased in, by and large they've been phased out.

you're retarded

You average medieval ground pounder wore 45-55 lbs. of armor, sport.
>>
>>31641502

What can a sword do that can't be accomplished by a detachable bayonet?
>>
>>31641686
The fact that nobody's being issued one. The fact that an m4 with one attached wouldn't be too much longer and far more unwieldy with the magazine in.

I'm saying that the matter has been looked into and largely decided you halfwit.

Sorry for shitting on your honorabru warrior fantasies but in modern warfare blades that inhabit the realm of practicality are mostly utilitarian.

Probably because the swords use through history is mostly romanticized in books and movies the same way our modern heroes always carry a pistol and use it to take down a whole gang of AK-47 wielding terrorists. Most soldiers would just carry the blade of an axe or spear and chop down a branch or small tree when they arrived to a battlefield. Besides being incredibly expensive and only ever owned by nobles and officers primarily in a ceremonial capacity, the sword is also heavy and cumbersome and in all honesty not actually a very good combat weapon. If a blade is chipped or cracked on impact then your primary weapon is fucked. If the shaft of a spear or axe is cracked or broken you just shove another stick up the ass end of it and fight on. The better alternative would be to carry a knife, which has far more functionately as a tool or utility, and just tie it to a shaft to make it into a spear if the situation should ever occur where you need a long range melee weapon

An officer is improperly dressed without a sword.

Honestly swords are over romanticized in media. The axe, spear, and sabre/cutlass/machete was wag more practical
