In reality that reason is South Carolina labor\ overhead is cheaper than Connecticut labor\overhead or FN was willing to make less on the .mil guns so they could market their civ guns at a premium. Contracts are lowest bid that satisfies requirements which is why I've never bought into the it's what the pros use marketing, but it works on average, just see Glock's success.

FN premium is for the brand name and quality of the product, and the future of the company.

Yeah, Colt's been a shitshow with a horrible corporate culture for years now, but muh 1911, MILSPEC, etc. kept them slogging along, they just keep changing hands\ reorganizing because the name is valuable. I'm slightly hopeful that at least Colt Defense is being run by actual gun people now, with some of their later products.
