Most .50BMG rifles are NOT sniper rifles, they are antimaterial rifles. A proper "Sniper Rifle" would ideally be a full power or magnum rifle cartridge with ideal ballistic properties i.e. .338 Lapua Magnum and 6.5 Grendel

Gunbroker if you want to try buying online, armslist if you want private sales. Though gun stores will also advertise on armslist. If you buy online you'll still have to go to a gun store and most likely pay a transfer fee in order to get your firearm. That said it can often be cheaper, sometimes much cheaper if all the local stores overprice their merchandise by enough. Alright, so you'll probably want something in .308 (7.62x51 mm NATO). You have the right bullet and you can take pretty much any game animal in the world. It's also readily available and pretty cheap.

Since you have the cash you could go for a SCAR, which are pretty good, or an AR-10. You can actually get an AR-10 almost exactly like the one in the OP pic if you wanted. IIRC that runs around $2,000 USD. There are numerous other rifles that use .308 if you don't want a semi-automatic or can't use one to hunt for whatever reason. I know Tikka sells some good rifles (just google Tikka rifle) that are well recommended by most of /k/ along with Savage offerings.

You will most likely need to drop some extra cash for a decent scope, but depending on budget, that isn't much of an issue.

Don't use 168gr SMK. Other brands are fine; it's just the boat tail angle that Sierra used on those particular ones apparently cause them to destabilize past ~600yds (altitude dependent). Their 175's are just fine though.

So /k/, since there's no precision rifle general, and since I'm new to owning a scoped rifle, could someone teach me the magic that is zeroing a scope.

Rem700, 7mm Rem Mag, Bushnell Banner 4-16x scope.
Bought it used with the scope already installed, rifle was already zeroed for 100 yards. After I bought it, I realized one of the scope rings was missing a screw, so I bought new scope rings and had them installed over the weekend.
Today I tried to zero it for 100 yards again, having only about six rounds in my opened box of ammo. First round hit low and left about six inches both directions, so I made scope adjustments (so I though), and fired a three round grouping on a 20x20 target.
All three rounds were about an inch or so apart, but were in the very bottom left corner of the target.
So I made adjustments to bring my reticle back up ten inches and right ten inches, and fired my remaining two rounds, neither of which even touched the paper.
I don't have a rifle vise or anything to immobilize my rifle while shooting, or it could have been shooter error, or it could have been a miscalculations on turret clicks.

Help me /k/, you're my only hope (before I let one of my old man neighbors zero it for me)

Your scope is probably marked for moving the reticle vs the bullet.

So you dialed in the exact opposite of what you needed.


For a bolt action. A gun vise helps but a bag and tripod can be used for an easy rough sight in.

Make the gun stable. Aiming towrds the target.
Pull out the bolt

Look through the bore and adjust the rifle till you see the target.

Make sure the gun is stable and wont move.

Now look through the scope with out touching the gun.

Adjust the scope untill the view through the bore and scope is as close as possible.


This will get you on paper.

With that budget, I'd get an AI AT .308. If you're gonna spend the money, might as well spend it on something tougher than nails, and consistently, brutal accurate.

What is another good way to immobilize a rifle for zeroing? Preferably using common items.
I'm thinking about driving two boards into the ground and crossing them to make an X shape, like a makeshift bipod that's driven into the ground. I have a small sandbag I can put under the butt of the stock that should work.
