I was a grunt and same. They give you 6 mag pouches +1 in rifle. If you want more they will give them to you. I still have about 12 GI mags in a seabag somewhere.

I started with 7 but on one patrol I spent 5 mags. After that I carried 9 on me.

Also mags are nothing, hump a SAW with 600 rounds on you.

Standard combat load is:
210 per rifle
600 per SAW
800 per 240- carried across the whole gun team

Keep in mind this is the by the book "standard" load. Depending on your role and mission you might carry more or less.

Usually our 240s carry well over 800 rounds. On the other hand our medics usually only carry about 4 mags and I carry the same as a RTO.
