Are there any good AR-10s under $800? Something equivalent to the M&P Sport or Colt LE6920?
Conversely, could a decent enough AR-10 be built for under $800?
Finally, would a 308 offer any significant advantages over 5.56 for a new shooter interested in range time and HD/SHTF?
I built an AR10 for under $800 and I'm quite pleased with it. I used a blemished PSA upper and blemished PSA lower, ballistic advantage barrel (on sale as BOTW), aero precision bolt (NiB meme on sale) and SLR rifleworks handguard (on sale). It shoots well and recoil isn't actually a big deal.
No I wouldn't use it for HD but it's a nice rifle to own and one of my favorites.

Very cool. How accurate is it? I read on another forum someone built a PSA AR10 for cheap and it shot sub MOA

I have not pushed the rifle since it only has an aimpoint on it but it definitely shoots around 1MOA from sandbags, and ballistic advantage has a 1MOA guarantee on their barrels using match ammo

Behold, the Poorfag-10.
$800 AR-10, plus tools and optic (eyes are too bad for irons). Prices include shipping and FFL fees. Most things bought on sale. Tack driver with good .308 ammo, reliably cycles Tula, feeds from 10, 20, and 25 round PMags. Doesn't like steel mags or 7.62 NATO ammo (.308 is hotter). PMags required some whittling to fit.

I'd say the only advantage to .308 is longer range and usefulness on deer. Expect to pay $0.40/rd, at least. Much more expensive for plinking, and unless you're shooting at well over 100 yards, the superior ballistics won't matter one bit.

I believe PSA PA-10 16" kits go on sale for $599 + S&H + PSA Lower (and it's S&H and FFL fees) every once in a blue moon. Nothing much in stock atm, though.

The only problem with this is that PSA are always sold out of their shit. They always have ar15 parts standby, but God forbid they ever stock ar10 parts. Would a dpms be a cheap alternative?

The trick there is Boyd's. It's laminate, which is 1/3 the price of solid wood.
>Would a dpms be a cheap alternative? Yes, if you can get a good price. Look into AR-10 compatibility. It's a mess. Unlike AR-15s, not everything's built to a common spec. Armalite and DPMS are the 2 major specs. PSA builds their PA-10 upper and lower to use DPMS spec parts, except for 4 proprietary parts in the lower that must come from PSA, and the upper must also be PSA. The rest is all DPMS spec, which means you can also use a standard AR-15 LPK (except for the abovementioned proprietary parts) and furniture.

they go through periods of having shit on ridiculous sales after doing a manufacturing run, and periods where they've sold out of an item and are waiting to do another manufacturing run
get their blemished stuff, 9 times out of then in my personal experience it's not actually blemished but rather they're just using it as a way to undersell their dealers

Unfortunately, all my info is pre-Orlando. Deals have been harder to get since then.
.308 is a meme round. absolutely worthless trash with shit ballistics.

Sorry, I'm still pretty new to firearms so I wasn't sure if there was some outstanding criticism of 308
