If you can't afford a $1000 AR, then get an M&P instead. It's only $600 but it's barrel is 1 in 9 and not chrome lined.

Let's say you built an AR in some configuration with a telescoping stock, such that when the stock was fully extended, the rifle was over the length minimum to not be an SBR. it also doesnt have to be 14.5". it can be any barrel length really. it just has to be atleast 16" with a perm attach muzzle device. for example, clone guys sometimes do a 10.5" barrel with a 6" FH.
also, depending on how it was attached, it pretty easy to get a pin and welded device off. pic is of one i removed the other day. i went slow and it was literally 15 minutes with a dremel. no damage to the threads
