I have no idea. Maybe it's because it's high contrast with the gauges and controls. Maybe turquoise paint was the cheapest, or some paint factory with buddies in high places had a shitload of turquoise to offload. I'm not sure if their current aircraft are painted this way, but the Soviet ones certainly were. I honestly love how quirky it is.

In the 90s, gun culture was kind of underground. Gun shows had everything from lightning links to Paladin Press "Exotic Weapons System" books and hitman manuals. The militia movement of the time was heavily involved in 90s gun culture, and many of them had bizarre political views based on conspiracy theories, racism, and fundamentalist Christianity. Black helicopters, fears of a "New World Order" installed by the UN, Millenarian prophecies about the second coming, and all kinds of stuff were very common. New Age ideas and the Christian response to them spawned armed cults, and Identity Christians (the crazy sect Randy Weaver belonged to) even believed white people were the chosen children of God who would be saved during the Apocalypse as predicted in Revelation. Funnily enough, illegal surveillance of civilians by the NSA was considered a crackpot conspiracy theory in the 90s. Strange stuff.

>WEAVER: You want to know how I feel about racists?

BROKAW: Yes.

WEAVER: I'll put it this way. I would go back to back in the trenches with any man of any race if he wants to fight for justice. Every man of every race, man, woman, child should be proud of who they are and what they are. Racist to me means loving your race. Being proud of yourself and who you are. And that's the way I have believed. I have never for, you know, I've always believed that way.

BROKAW: But you went as well to the Aryan Church of Jesus Christ, Paul Butler's church. And he teaches more than just racial separatism.

WEAVER: Right. Yeah, he does. And I don't agree with that. We disagree on a lot of things. But I went to four maybe five meetings over a four year period and usually ended up in arguments when I was there about racial, political, religious beliefs. I don't follow anybody. I've never joined that church. I haven't belonged to a church since I was 12 years old and that was Presbyterian. I quit the NRA in 1980. I don't belong to anything. I'm not a joiner.

Bull. Weaver first met the ATF informant who informed the feds that he sold two short-barreled shotguns illegally at a fucking Aryan Nations meeting. He was invited by an associate of his who was involved with the group Covenant, Sword, and Arm of the Lord. Despite what he said on the news, his history says otherwise. Besides that, Vicki Weaver and their boys were heavily into the Christian Identity shit. Randy was related to Identity Christians, he was buddies with a guy involved in a white supremacist Christian militia that committed domestic terrorist acts in the South, and he met the informant who ratted him out at an Aryan Nations meeting. He was definitely a racist crackpot. Maybe not as nuts as Vicki Weaver, but still nuts.

The AWB sucked ass, the whole country had to buy rifles with weird thumbhole stocks, and Mini-14s were all the rage. Gun culture and radical right wing politics of the 70s, 80s, and 90s is one of my favorite things to study. The history was weird and riddled with shit that would later be ripped from the headlines and inserted into X-Files and Law and Order episodes.

While not exactly SF, here's a clip from Afghan that you've probably already seen a billion times.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBDc2pDQgVg

Still a great scene though.

>>31610023
2 stick of TNT is a bit excessive for a breaching charge isn't it? That puts the safety standoff distance at at least 12-15 meters.
>>
>>31610447
Pretty sure that's some form of plastic explosive.
>>
>>31610447
Its probably some sort of low explosives, or he wants to kill the shit out of whoever is occupying the building and behind that door.

That IS 2, 1 lb sticks of TNT with a detonation velocity of 6900 meters per second and an REF of 1.00. It's not "plastic explosive" it's not some form of low explosive. I've only set of a few thousand of them as a Combat Engineer.

Looks like a training exercise to be honest. I don't know why you would use time fuse to set off a breaching charge. IT would take 2-4 minutes to burn through that length of time fuse.

I was thinking about it many times - how come Jeans never became an uniform in any armies prior to WW2?
(pls no American Civil War.)
I saw many uniforms from WW1 and WW2, and they are mostly made of thick wool-like fiber, hard to dry, and insanely hot in the summer.

I once spoke to a recon marine who was a painter in the first gulf war.
Or at least he said he was. Is it true, that they only used M16's with 3-round burst, no full-auto?
I thought he was lying.

I would reckon because jeans weren't considered casual wear back then, and were reserved for laborers in the States like miners or farmers.

Probably both of those things. .30 Carbine is very easy to handle, too, so if you had an M2 you'd basically have a submachine gun with a little extra kick. SOG teams were known to carry chopped M79s with them. They were used as a standoff weapon, so in case of an ambush they could quickly unload a 40mm grenade or two and disappear into the jungle in the ensuing chaos.

Not a lot, but enough to show it was a thing. I'll give that the above mag looks like a dead ringer for a 7.62x39 AR mag, but I just don't see much evidence for those rifle being around much. The earliest real example I can see of a 7.62x39 AR is the SR-47, and that's from the early 2000s.

I think it's just more plausible that a small, detachable, cheap piece that is the mag was extended rather than assuming an entire niche rifle was developed and given to one guy on the team.

its happened in just about every war, soldiers with a little ingenuity can make a better gun for themselves than any engineering team. Thats also why many marines brought along there personal rifles.

>Better than any engineering team.

To be fair, for every one good field improvement, there were probably about 100 janky ones that were worse than the GI layout.

>Bringing personal rifles

I have never seen proof of this happening, at least as much to be considered "common". Outside of units with more lax standards for that kind of thing like SEALs and Green Berets and such, I doubt you would see many personal weapons, especially rifles getting brought into country.

There was/is use of non-standard weapons, but those are picked up in country, not brought from home.

then you arent looking.
i admit you have to take their word for it but its not like they taking it with them just to pose for a picture. But if i were a soldier(and had the ability too) i build my own personal upper that fits my wants and take it with me. But i was really refering to WWI/II, Korea, and Vietnam. The fun of war was ruined by bureaucracy and the idea someone was always accountable.

That's because they didn't really do much. Most of the fighting was carried out by VDV and recon troops. Motor rifles were just there to hold ground and get shot at occasionally.
