Can someone tell me about the First World War in a nutshell?? Also ww1 thread.
It was a war between barbed wire and artillery.
Barbed wire won.

it was a war between the evil Germans/Austrians and Great Britain/USA as usual.

>Politics Wise
A series of complex military alliance's between major European nations was established to maintain a balance of power in Europe. When war was declared, the pride and arrogance of the monarchs who ruled those nations prevented them from de-escalating the conflict and see it through until the end
>Military Wise
During the initial skirmishes and battles fought on the outset of the war. Tactics were based on Mobility and offensive doctrine. But weaponry at the time benefitted a stationary and defensive doctrine. Outdated strategies clashed with modern weaponry. Trench warfare became the norm now. And both sides were developing new technologies to break the stalemate of trench warfare. As trench warfare is a war of attrition the Central Powers could not keep paying the cost and with the arrival of the US in the war, fresh men and equipment, it was GG for the Central Powers.

>WW1 inna nutshell
Along time ago in a Europe Philosophically Far Far Away....
British Empire and Germany got into an arms race trying to justify increased naval build up, which was a source of pride for nations back in the day. This led to tensions rising between them.
Meanwhile, The Austro-Hungarian Empire has their new Archduke assassinated in Sarajevo by Pro-Russian, Pan-Slavic anarchists who are pissed at Austrian oppression of their people for centuries.
This enrages the Austrians, and they invade Serbia, which the Russians dont like and threaten war over.
Austrians are freaked out by this and ask Germany to assist. The germans accept.
This prompts the Russians to seek alliance with the French and British.
A war that began over the occupation of Serbia begins conflict because of a German invasion of France.
The rest is history, basically LOTs of killing, with all beligerents using tactics made frighteningly obsolete by industrialized warfare.
Western front (France) becomes deadly stalemate. Eastern Front has a lot of dying and is so unpopular in Russia that there is a Revolution, giving birth to Soviet Union. Allied powers get fucked by Turk Roaches at Gallipoli, and the warplane and tank are born.
Burgerland joins in at the last minute because the Germans are fighting dirty and public opinion turns the formerly neutral populace against the Hun.
When the war ends, everyone blames Germany for everything and inflicts severe reparations and military restrictions, which prompts the rise of the Nazis 15 years later.

Do you believe that "lions led by donkeys" shit? Or that they were in the trenches for months at a time and under constant bombardment?
>>31608883
According to Trevor Wilson, Commonwealth troops on the Western Front were on average rotated on a three week to one month basis, although extended operations typically demanded longer stays. In fact, some were in the front lines for several months during the Hundred Days Offensive. The French, as another example, implemented Petain's idea of "Noria", of rotating combat units out of the Verdun trench lines on a regular basis, unlike the Germans that had their units worn down to the nub.
Nevertheless, I don't think that discounts the magnitude of the horrors of the Western Front, or any other theatre of the First World War.
>>31608883
I've never read The Donkeys. Of course not, units were rotated in and out of the trenches unless it was impractical (long operations) and bombardments generally were before attacks not just constant.
>>31608957
I find John Laffin and Alan Clark's viewpoints understandable, but woefully lacking in scholarship with regards to WWI. It's interesting to see that men like Haig were hailed as heroes in the 1920s. However, later with the resurgence of memoirs by soldiers and politicians exposing Haig's failings, as well as the increasing popularity of Lloyd George's quite eloquent, if self-aggrandising personal account, Haig's reputation has not been exactly lionised.
I think that the whole "Lions Led by Donkeys" attitude has a grain of truth to it, but is also a gross simplification of the conduct of the war. As a critique of the cowardice of the generals leading to mass slaughter of the ranks, it doesn't really hold up, as exceptionally brave generals such as Charles Mangin could be just as sanguinary in the commitment of troops into the meatgrinder as their contemporaries at the rear HQ.
From the perspective that the generals wanted glory and fame while disregarding the plight of their men, then there's certainly a case to be made here, particularly regarding leaders such as Luigi Cadorna, or Conrad von Hötzendorf, although the latter was a much more complex individual than many give him credit for. Woefully incompetent as a coordinator of grand strategy, but not quite the absolute nincompoop that he is made out to be either; indeed, Alistair Horne rated him a finer officer than Falkenhayn, interestingly enough. As for Haig, it could be said that he genuinely believed in the ability of his forces to effect breakthrough in 1916, and according to OHL dispatches, the Somme campaign following the disastrous first day almost did culminate in breakthrough - not that it stopped fifteen German divisions being routed around to Verdun anyway.
(Cont'd)
>>31609278
As for Haig, he retained a parochial fascination with massed cavalry assaults well into the 1920s, while also entertaining the dialectic of acknowledging the tank as the premiere breakthrough tool. Haig, as such, was a man of many contradictions, requiring the sanding of roads for his daily horse rides during the Somme operations, and also displaying a surprising level of compassion for wounded troops and his subordinates during and after the war. It was more likely ignorance and hubris, therefore, that led to the fruitless deaths of men at battles such as Passchendaele and Broodseinde, and it was also a sharp realisation of British dispositions and morale, that led to his petitioning of Ferdinand Foch for the cancellation of a preliminary offensive in the weeks before the Hundred Days.
On opposite sides, you have Clark and Terraine, facing off in their depictions of generals on the Western Front; the French have their own debate in the form of Joffre and Nivelle, two men that possibly and inadvertently caused the military loss of French life since the Napoleonic Wars; in Italy, many despise Cadorna, despite roads and squares bearing his name; in Germany, Falkenhayn; and so on for the travesties that occurred in Russia and the Austro-Hungarian Empires.
This is not a defence of Haig or any other general, or an apology for them either; rather, it's just a summation of what I believe to be a complex and ultimately unsolvable historiographical issue.
I wrote far more than I was expecting to, sorry about that.

So baisically in warfare theres usually a wing or branch of the military that is used to exploit a battlefield victory. Used to be cavalry. For several thousand years. Then machine guns became a thing, and suddenly people dont really know how to turn a won battle into something meaningful anymore. Later tanks, airplanes, and better logistical support will resolve this but for roughly 3.5 years each side threw large masses of men inbetween the cogs of massed artillery pieces while throwing in novel concepts, ideas, and inventions to see if anything can replace the function cavalry used to fill.
In the west, this turns into a stalemate after initial german victories capture a good chunk of france by catching the french flat footed with how concentrated their flanking force was. Sometimes generals will accumulate enough shells to blow up a section of the front they need to capture and take it with heavy losses. Usually it gets taken right back by the other sides counter arty counter attack.
In the east, armies move and smash into eachother rather haphazardly. As one side gains the upper hand, they gain some ground but quickly find themselves far past supply lines and unable to make much out of their victory without fresh troops, bullets, shells, and food. Then they get pushed back. There is movent of hundreds of miles but its essentially the same stalemate.
Oh the austro hungarians are hilariously inept by the way. They get smashed by the goddamn serbs right after they first invade despite a 2:1 advantage. Outdated equipment, insufficient supply, fractured leadership, communicating in a half dozen languages and so forth all contribute to very poor performance. Evevntually their allies will come help kill the serb but by the time thats done the AH are so weakened the cant really even launch meaningful offensives anymore. They do better against the russians at least (by which i mean they quickly flux in gaining and losing ground.
>>31603844
Anon delivers! Thanks! That was great.
>>31613491
Eventually the germans bribe kebab into coming in and britain bribes italy into coming in amd the war expands. France and GB bring in colonials to help offset their huge losses while russia just keeps drawing from the same pool. AH is baisically held together with tape and string after the first year or so but manages to get by with german backing.
Italy attacks over the same river (Isonzo?) like 10 times but never gets anywhere. Kebab tries to take some colonies from GB and france but does rather poorly. GB throws some colonials at the dardenelles to try and quick KO the turks but it flops and they just feed that meat grinder out of frustration for several months before giving up.
Russia eventually starts losing so many people that their government has a loss of legitamacy and the tsar gives up being tsar after lots of people revolt from no bread for 6 months. Provisional government attempts to continue war for a while but is cooped by reds. Civil war in russia as it withdraws from the war.
Germany pulls its eastern forces and throws them into france with one last push. Oh theyre pretty much no bread for 24 months because of british blockade. Europe doesnt produce enough food to feed itself in peace let alone wartime. Theyre running out of most other materials and are melting church bells at this point for steel.
Last push fails, france and GB push in with reserves theyve been building for a while along with some amerifats who have come over as well. Overwhelming numbers of shells and men win the push. Rudementary combined arms is established and they have fancy new stuff like tanks and advanced artillery support (creeping barrage is an example.)
Germans are slowly pushed back. Plan to keep holding at least until they start losing german territory. GB suddenly activates troops theyve been hoarding in greece and collapses the whole southern flank of AH.
Central powers realize the jig is up and white flag.

Tanks and creeping barrages were already a thing in 1916, not just by the end of the war - although you're right about their integration, which mostly got figured out by the end of the war.
>>31613591
Right, important to note that it wasnt that they had new stuff that made larger advances possible. It was that they had learned how to use it all effectively and in conjunction with eachother to overcome a variety of obstacles.
This combined arms approach is what allows an exploitation of a battlefield victory, even with the heavy losses associated with the (relatively) confined space of the western front.

>A war that began over the occupation of Serbia
Keep in mind that every single party, even Austria Hungary, had goals other than A. invading Serbia and B. aiding their allies.
Germany wanted to give Russia an asskciking before it could become a global power.
Austria Hungary wanted to expand into the Balkans.
Ottomans wanted to seize Brit/French colonies.
France wanted revenge, and the Alsace/Lorraine back.
Brits wanted to get rid of the German Navy ( you did mention that one)
Russia wanted to become that global power, and wanted to casually liberate some more Slavs.
Basically, everyone was armed, everyone had some score to settle or objective to achieve, and it was just this tiny incident that caused some big shit to hit an even bigger fan.

> why would you want to put the enemy on your body.
Because they aren't my enemy you fucking autist. None of us were alive then, and almost everyone on this board lives in a country that is on good terms with Germany and Austria.

You know what pissed me off most?
They gave pilots (well everyone actually) chutes. Battlefield dogfighting is boring as hell because you can bail at any moment and survive. It could have been so tense and exciting if you were trapped in those planes and actually had to fly smart to avoid death, or bailing meant falling a few hundred yards like a sack of potatos.
