I don't feel comfortable until I have 20 mags for a gun, and that's just my hand guns and odd rifles like my 10/22. I lost count of how many AR and AK mags I have stored away.

More than 10 magazines for any given firearm is too much. In what situation will you:
A. Be able to carry all those
B. Have to need that much ammo readily available
C. It's better to have a firearm that accepts both mags as well as clips anyways (vZ.58 for instance)

You can never have enough of anything when it comes to firearms. The only time it is a problem is if buying guns or things related to guns gets in the way of paying normal bills. Don't buy so much that you cant pay you house payment.

Is there any point in stocking up on mags when I live in NY? We already can only get 10 rounders and I dont see those being banned

I dont ever plan to load all of those mags at once nor do I plan to carry all of those mags at once. If they ban the sale of new mags they are going to be a finite resource. feedlips bend, you forget them at the range, bend one, etc and it is gone forever in a ban situation.

I'm too much of a poorfag to stock up right now so I'm trying to focus on getting more ammo which I have precious little of.

How about clips? If a firearm is owned that can accept both clips and magazines like the M1A, vZ.58, Mini-14 with clip guide, SKS-45 with Tapco mag, etc., then you can save quite a bit of weight by having half your ammo in mags and half your ammo in clips. I've already done the math for a vZ.58, and having 4 mags and 12 clips instead of all 240 rounds being in 8 mags, you can save over 2lb, which can allow you to have a 5th mag while STILL being less weight, or choose to have 18 clips instead of 12 for 60 more rounds (300 in total instead of 240) while being NEARLY the same weight as 8 mags.

I'd call that pretty substantial, and the benefit is still present whether it's with 7.62x39, .223/5.56, or .308/7.62 Nato. Having half the ammo in mags and half the ammo in clips makes for either quite a bit of weight saved (not to mention a cheaper/less bulky loadout), or, that saved weight can go towards carrying MORE ammo for the same amount of weight as JUST having mags.

No, I'm not nutnfancy, I'm not having a stroke, but I can see the advantages of weight maintenance. My gut, however, is calling me a liar.
