The counterbalance system wouldn't be mechanically possible with an AR. The gas piston allows for a segment of tube where, if elongated, can house a piece of weighting going the opposite direction to account for the rest of the motion in the rifle. Since the AR-15 uses gas impingement this would be much more difficult. The tube in the AR carries gas directly back, instead of actuating a piston. The diameter of the tube used here would require a great elongation of the weapon in total and almost not be worth the trouble.
