>S200 that the Syrians themselves are already operating.

The big old S200s are not particulary effective against high tech warplanes the US or Israel or Turkey will deploy. BUK on the other hand is pretty fucking lethal. The russians themselves couldn't jam it effectively in Georgia. So that might cz some casualties if deployed correctly. Their only drawback is their 'relatively short' 30-45 km range.

But S300 and S400 are on a whole different level. They can and probably WILL be beaten and destroyed in the end, but not before shooting down dozens of attacking aircraft as not even the Raptor can hide from their long wave lenght radars. F16s and F15s or F18s have NO WAY of hiding from their radars...and I wouldn't even bother with EW. Buk is 1 scale lower then S300 and 2 scales lower than S400 and it's own creators, the russians, couldn't jam them effectively. What chance do american EW planes, Growlers and others have to jam them? They were designed to operate under heavy EW.

If Clinton becomes POTUS then we will know for sure soon.
>>
>>31589683
The US government boasted that they will crush the Talib goatherders 15 years ago and they are still aren't making progress and the Taliban didn't have high tech weapon 'donators' behind them, like the ISIS has now.

In light of that, ISIS is on it's last legs and unless the US makes war upon Syrians and Russians to save these shitheads, then they will be wiped out soon, thankfully.

Dude, shooting down such things is not something impossible. Even for export versions of not most advanced systems. It was impossible in 90th, but not today. 2G maneuver capability is a joke. S300 modification deployed in Syria is top of the line. And, probably, it has full set of SA-22s for self-defence.
>>
>>31589788
Top of the line by Russian standards
Anyway you don't need to shoot it out of the sky take it out while it is still on the ground. It is not gonna be able to counter a cruise missile, hell probably not even a strike from the fighters it is suppose to shoot down.

Are we seriously this close to war over fucking Syria?

SYRIA. Really?
>>
>>31585758
a) Russia's presence in the region is tiny, compare that with dozens of US mil bases and tens of thousands of personnel throughout the region (outgunned and surrounded and isolated).
b) The US will never deliberately strike against Assad as this would be against US interests, keep in mind that US Syria policy is incredibly schizophrenic (otherwise this would have been done years ago). I suggest you /pol/ tards and Vatniks read up on this a bit more as none of you seem to know much about Syira, the war or US policy toward it.
c) The S-whatevers, although effective, are not "invincible" nor can they be used against the B-2/F-22 (this is already irrelevant as the US will never even attempt to strike the Ruskies because see point B). There is no credible evidence to suggest that these air defence systems can track stealth with "low frequency radio waves". These air defence systems are mainly political tools for the Kremlin anyway, and rather pointless because they are protecting the area of Syria the US is least likely to strike, which by the way, is never going to happen.
d) Whether Russia or the US like it or not, the Sunni states are likely to start supplying the rebels much much more as they continue to suffer defeats, and I don't think the S-super weapons can stop weapons ideal for insurgencies from coming across the hundreds of kilometres of border the rebels share with Turkey.

So that's the situation and I'm tired of seeing threads about this every single fucking day.
>>
>>31590616
We have gone to war over dinner interational incidents.

It only takes some politicians with a negligent foreign policy who love to talk tough.
>>
>>31590624

You mean like the US "accidentally" killing saa troops last month? How many times do you think this will keep happening until they don't seem like accidents anymore? When numerous warhawk politicians and military leaders are pushing for the US to attack the saa on top of it already happening in the past your second point doesn't stand up to scrutiny.
>>
>>31590624
>The US will never deliberately strike against Assad as this would be against US interests, keep in mind that US Syria policy is incredibly schizophrenic
Well, the biggest lesson from Iraq/Afghanistan was "they have to do it themselves with a little help", because ISIS as it is now is mostly the result of US-controlled activities just being dropped once handed off to the Iraqi government (notably the camps where the worst of the insurgents were imprisoned and dropping the Sons of Iraq from payroll instead of integrating them into the military).

The US has been doing strikes around Deir Ez-Zor for months against ISIS and not once in that time have they struck the SAA, until recently.

Why are they doing strikes there?

That's because Deir is under siege by ISIS and is constantly under attack by ISIS, thus, this makes it an ideal place for striking ISIS because there is a lot of ISIS members staging in the area because ISIS is attacking Deir all the time, because for ISIS, they can't ignore it as it is smack bang in the middle of their supply lines along the Euprates.
>>
>>31590774
Iraq and Afghan have nothing to do with Syria, the civil war broke out for reasons unique to Syria, nothing else.

ISIS just exploited the anarchy and went over the border to Syria, then back again in force.. we all know the story.

My concern isn't with Russia in Syria, but a Russian invasion of the Baltic nations. They would likely fall in 2-3 days tops. Many Russians see the Baltics as an extension of Russia's territorial integrity. That means they'd likely use nuclear weapons to defend them.
>>
>>31589864
That's not the way it works. The point isn't to give it so many targets that it can't track them all, the point is to make them decide if they want to shoot or not. If they shoot at the decoys they're wasting missiles and opening themselves up to counter strike since they're radiating, if they don't shoot they're risking actual cruise missiles leaking or strike aircraft with shorter-range stand-off weaponry getting close enough to launch on their targets.

A far lower-risk option is to seize Gotland and use it to control the Baltic. That way you don't have to invade a NATO nation, but still get the majority of the benefits if you had done so.

Are you actually mentally retarded, or just clueless about what you're talking about and eager to spew out your boilerplate garbage on how advanced the US' military equipment is?

T-90s are ahead of M1A2s by miles - in maneuverability, resilience, electronic suites, you name it. Most of the TUSK kit addons are standard issue on T-90 series, and with ERA you're looking at up to 200cm RHA equivalent on most areas. The Rheinmetall on the M1A2 firing APFSDS tungsten can barely hit the 160cm mark on plain RHA.

The USS Donald Cook, supposedly one of the finest retrofit destroyers in the USN, was trolled by one entire Russian EW jet.

My Korund-VM circa 2003 has NIJ 5 plates with NIJ 3 kevlar. The Ratnik program is bringing NIJ 5 equivalent armor to all vital front line units.

But you know what? I don't give a fuck. Sure, I'd rather have one of the Pauls, but I'd prefer an ignorant moron with a platform similar to mine than the smartest career politician or businessman in the world with a platform I disagree with.

Besides, it's unfair to say he's not a libertarian. He differs in a few minor points, but all parties have to accept some variation. If Susan Collins is a Republican, and Joe Manchin's a Democrat, there's no way you can argue Johnson isn't enough of a Libertarian. So what if he's for a carbon tax and agrees with the sjws that businesses can't refuse to serve. I disagree with those points too, but they're irrelevant compared to gun rights, the war on drugs, and excessive spending, which no other major candidate has a good plan for.

"Nation-building" isn't the war phase, it's the police phase. If you aren't going to conquer the people, you're acting to protect the people's will against the old guard like the Taliban and foreign insurgents like in Iraq.

Vietnam: Pretty much constant military victory ending in a peace treaty and telling South Vietnam they were on their own when we got tired.
Panama: Overwhelming victory
Desert Storm: Overwhelming victory
Somalia: Dicked around, lost a few people in a massively one-sided fight between Rangers and a giant drugged-up mob with a 50:1 K:L ratio.
Bosnia/Kosovo/Serbia: Uncontested control of the skies and UN peacekeeper control by early oughts.

Iraq invasion: Overwhelming victory

Yup. You can bet your ass neither Bush, Clinton, Reagan or Carter were any different. Ford I can't say for sure, I haven't read as much about him. Johnson and Nixon definitely the same. Possibly the last seriously religious president we had was Kennedy, and even then it's not absolutely proven.

long wavelength radar isnt absorbed by the material on stealth planes, this has been well known by the military for a long time.

Problem is you cant put this kind of a radar into a plane.

You can deploy it on the ground, which is why russia has hedged so heavily both in SAM development, and in this case deployment.

So the game here is, does the US want to try to continue to fight overhead of the SAMs (ie, let the russians strike first or call their bluff), do we suspend operations in syria, do we give the rebels manpads (which we seem to be in the process of doing), or do we first strike the radar sites with growlers and cruise missles.

The russian move forces the US to be overt, force a sacrifice of a plane for public support, or gtfo. Its definitely a strong move on their part that is very logical and forces the US hand. Unfortunately I think the hawks want this war and this just accelerates it....

Those waters were far, far deeper than he liked to let on. You don't get an MBA from Harvard by being a dummy, and he's the only president who every got an MBA, much less one from Harvard. Granted, his college record at Yale is less than stellar, but the more I look at him out of office in private life now, the more I think he tried very hard to project "faintly bewildered with folksy bonhomme".

Not that I think he was a spectacular president, but I think history in 50 years will be much kinder to him than those of the last few years. We'll see, I guess. Depends on how much his immediate response to 9/11 is outweighed by things like the Patriot Act. The Great Recession was a culmination of the dismantling of Glass-Stiegel begun in the 1960's, accelerated by Reagan, culminated by Clinton and given the coupe de gras by Bush, so that can't be laid at his feet completely.

that's more or less my impression of him down ot the T. you'd be hard pressed to find a president since the vietnam war era who was handled a heavier burden than bush 43. the democrats' success in swaying public opinion (and most notably, blame) so swiftly from the wars they had almost unanimously supported in the wake of 9/11 is probably the most successful, calculated media blitz in the history of the country. with a couple decades' reflection, the politicization will fade and i hope for a more measured assessment of bush's term in office.
>>
>>31600319
As opposed to shooting down an airplane or two? Happens all the time. Everyone will wave it off. The missiles in the baltics aren't important because they're going to be shot they're important because of the intimidation factor on eastern europe which has virtually no air or missile defenses. Putin knows he can't take on the US but he can chip away at allies in EE and ME. It's the Cold War all over again but Russia has to start from further away but the proxy game remains the same.

At least on a personal level he wasn't that bad.

Or Kennedy, who fucked around so much he had the Secret Service take porn photos to get framed.

Or LBJ, who used his dick as both an intimidation tool and a negotiation piece. Literally. He whipped it out on everyone. And owned an amphibious car and while driving dignitaries around he'd pretend to lose control and steer it off the road into the water.

Sorry to jump in on this late, but just to clear the air going forward we're pretty much certain the s-300/400/buk systems are useless for stealth aircraft right? Long wave radar can "see" stealth, but it can't do ID, get a good range, bearing and track, or estimate altitude. And because it requires massive antennas, it's very easy to explosively dismantle.

The Russians pull out this Sour Grapes shit about stealth all the time, as if the US hadn't thought of using WWII radars or done any tactics or strategy around breaking such a network.
>>
>>31600555

Daily reminder that the US has more naval and air forces combat power than the next six to eight countries combined, with ground force levels still more than dominant. There aren't two countries on this earth that could keep the US from dismantling their countries in a conventional conflict, especially as all that would be required is a careful dismantling of all power structures and seaborne trade. The US doesn't need to invade Russia or China to bring them to their knees. Simply dismantle the bulk of the IADS and C4SIR nodes, sink every warship, blockade every harbor and then destroy every rail and roadway hub. Let the starving people destroy their own government.

Pretty much. I mean, sure, you can use less accurate radars to target and shoot at stuff ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysia_Airlines_Flight_17 ), but most countries frown on burning assets and giving away position when you aren't sure it's a definite enemy target.

> And another thing, how much stock are we supposed to put into all the ewar black magic that growlers and burkes supposedly have, and how do we figure this plays into all this?

its not really black magic, jammers work by creating a noise floor that makes it more difficult to interpret what is a meaningful signal.

in 4chan terms, its kinda like a ddos, there is so much noise you cant figure out which are legitimate requests and which arnt. I'm sure how they actually create this noise floor is more sophisticated than shooting a radar noise beam but thats the theory behind it.

As far as how EW plays a role, I hope it doesnt. We could fuck with the radar, but its not so safe that you can just jam it while we do air strikes and ignore the sams. We would have to destroy the sams in order to operate safely.

Because the undertaxed wealthy don't put that money into payroll, they put it into their pockets. So all wages, especially at the bottom, have stagnated while cost of living soars. Fix that and make wages at least bring 40/week work above the poverty line and boom, not just less welfare but more taxpayers!
>>
>>31600726
well what is there in terms of potential threats? Wars aren't even cost effective anymore, and I think it'd be more important to have a powerful economy then a powerful military, as the latter stems from the former. There'll never be a drastically significant threat that requires us to have 20 carrier groups, and the military budgets of the next 8 nations combined, and if there is, then the whole world is about to get Kentucky fried, so won't exactly matter.

A strong military is fine, heck, I don't have a problem with it, but we spend infinately more then is actually necessary.
