You guys know they make hornet spray, right? It's cheap, works from 20' or more away, won't damage the paint on your house with solvents, won't damage the house on your house with fire, will foam into all the chambers of the nest, has days of residual, and, notably, kills instantly.

Also, get a bird feeder, and stock it with seed. A surprising number of birds will eat wasps and hornets, and even if they're full on seed, hornets are easier to carry back to the nest and more protein-rich for their young. Hornets will also be less likely to set up in the first place if they have to fight through a horde of predators just to make it onto your property.

Alternatively, buy an ATF's worth of bottle rockets and set 'em off under the nest. Tell homeowner's insurance it was terrorism, which is technically true.

I usually use the heavy plastic stunner darts from a distance.
Works great on everything up to bird nests in out-buildings.
My furthest hit on a bird is ~30 yards. I didn't hit him the first time, but they're so dumb when it comes to these silent projectiles landing. It takes a bit of a lob to launch stunners that far. Within 5 or 6 shots, I knocked it silly with one.

Really though, had a fuckload of yellow jackets take residence in my car. Sprayed the guards then stuck the nozzle to the holes they got in through and gassed them. Also put up a bag trap. Those things scare me now. Set the thing up after dark when the little shits should have been asleep or inactive. Within 5 minutes it had about 15-20 trying to get in. By the time I woke up around 10-11AM the next day there were at least 50-75 of them in there. They just kept coming over the next week too.
