Yes it is. It's a popular hunting cartridge in America, Canada, South America and Europe and on par in popularity with the 7mm-08. It's also popular with handloaders as well

SKS rifles can still be found for $200 or so. I local gun shop just advertised a very nice chicom one for $250 out the door. It's still the cheapest centerfire semi auto rifle available.
