Let's have a moment of silence for the laughter that his novel, his views, and his life has given us.

What? Don't you belive FDR had a crystal ball and knew before Pearl Harbor about carrier strike tactics and the outcome of midway, making the loss of all the Pacific battleships and 2700 sailors acceptable?

The oil embargo was about making Japan angry enough to attack, not depriving them of resources to open up a colonial front against the brits and cutting the allies off from southeast Asian rubber.

Also, Hitler dindu nuffin wrong.

I read T.X. Hammes' The Sling and the Stone for class last month. Hammes is largely responsible for repopularizing generational warfare as a model of military change and for fleshing out 4GW as a theory (he wrote his book in 2004, Lind published in the 80s). He has some good points about COIN strategy, but I think using the generational warfare model was unnecessary and hurt his argument more than it helps.

What struck me though is that Hammes repeatedly notes that 4GW warfare will *never* be sufficient to win if the 4GW side poses an existential threat to the 3GW side. Hezbollah might be able to force Israel to withdraw from Lebanon using asymmetric warfare, but they would never be able to carbomb the IDF into pulling out of Tel Aviv. In those cases the 4GW side still has to end their campaign with a conventional phase, like the NVA driving tanks into Saigon in '75.

But in Victoria, the US Government gets annihilated by 4GW forces with no real conventional warfare phase because right up until the end the Pentagon is more concerned about political correctness than about an existential threat. It's like Lind couldn't be fucked to apply his own model correctly.

>William S. Lind (born July 9, 1947) is an American monarchist, paleoconservative, columnist, Christian, and a light rail enthusiast.[1][2][3] He's the author of several books and one of the first proponents of the Fourth-generation warfare theory. More recently Lind has advocated for police to have RPGs as standard issue, and for a return to death by hanging as a common sentence for crime in 'urban areas'.[4][5]

Now I'm more confused than ever. Can someone clue me in, I assume there have been /k/ threads before mocking him?

Wait, I see he used to work for Gary Hart.

>In 1984, Senator Gary Hart published America Can Win: The Case for Military Reform. Written with his aide William Lind, Hart demanded congressional intervention on weapons acquisitions and focused on the Critics two main criticisms of American defense strategy, the plan to fight both the air-to-air and air-to-ground battles in all- weather conditions and at night, and the need for deep interdiction, both of which Hart and Lind opposed. In the book, Hart offered specific proposals for his ideal mix of AirForce tactical systems in the FY1985 and future defense budgets. The proposals included stopping production of the F-15 and replacing it in the air-to-air role with a new lightweight fighter -- the F-16 was now considered too heavy -- that would have no radar and would cost one-third less than the F-16. All work on the Air Force F-111 and F-15E deep interdiction aircraft would be stopped and the AMRAAM and LANTIRN would be cancelled, in part because Hart said that using LANTIRN puts unreasonable operating stress on fighter pilots and subjects them to dangerous ground fire (pilots using the LANTIRN, even in the single seat F-16, disagreed). The TAF would focus solely on close air support, replacing the F-111 and F-15E with a new, very simple (even compared to the A-10) aircraft called the Combined Arms Fighter armed only with a heavy cannon.

Someone must have added that since he became a meme on /k/ (it's true though)

William Lind was an active military theorist in the 1980s. At one time serious people in the military listened to his opinions, but even back then he was part of the Sprey brigade. His chief contribution to theory is the Generation Warfare model, which groups modern (as in post-gunpowder)warfare into four "generations:" Massed Manpower (Napoleonic line & column), Firepower (WW1 artillery), Maneuver (Blitzkrieg) and "Fourth Generation" (Insurgency). Generation Warfare has been subject to widespread criticism and few people in the field accept it unreservedly. Even Hammes, the most significant modern proponent of it, mainly uses it as a vehicle for his arguments for US military COIN reform.

Since the 1990s, Lind has moved on from the Pentagon and become a luminary of the Traditional Conservative movement. Sometime after that he wrote a fiction book, Victoria: A Novel of Fourth-Generation War, which describes a traditional conservative Christian rebellion in Maine defeating the Federal Government with 4GW techniques.

Victoria attracted /k/'s notice because of its unflinchingly realistic military scenarios, such as

>F-16s making gun kills on F-22s
>F-16s making gun kills on F-35s
>AMRAAMs unable to engage diamond formations
>T-34s defeating the US Army
>Divisions of loyalist gangbangers dying for the Union (pic related, Cpl Jackson never forget)
>F-35s being shot down by Strela-2s
>an Arado 234 dropping a nuclear bomb on Atlanta

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Lind never expressed his opinions on blacks while he was still working at the Pentagon.

Victoria exhibits an odd, paternalistic racism where Lind clearly doesn't like niggers, but he can't bring himself to admit it, so he tries very hard to distinguish between the good christian niggers and the bad gang niggers.

This results in his positive black characters ("the Council of Responsible Negroes") apologizing unreservedly for ruining the inner cities and voting near-unanimously to become second-class citizens, accepting immediate capital punishment without legal defense for blacks who commit such crimes as possessing a handgun.

All the bad niggers side with the Federal Government or the Arab League and are shot in the course of 4th Generation Warfare.

>There are many things to say about Sprey, but he definitely wouldn't approve that /pol/ shit.

If you mean the picture, that was OC from one of the Victoria threads, not something Lind wrote.

See, in the Lindverse, nobody likes the Union enough to fight for it once the Christians leave the military, so the Federal Government has to conscript inner city black gangs to fight the secessionists. These hapless gangbangers rape and pillage their way up the New England coast, but are too incompetent and ill-trained to defeat 4GW Christian Operators and are promptly annihilated when they enter Victorian territory.

However, because Lind's protagonists are unlikeable wehraboo fucks, /k/ grew sympathetic to the patriotic gangbangers who fought in vain to save the republic, and constructed elaborate counter-narratives about the Last Stand of the 42nd Division against an army of radical Christian traitors, such as the citation for Cpl. Jackson.

1. Because the Washington naval treaty placed a hard limit on the number of battleships the signatory nations could possess, and carriers were an exception.
2. They were meant for an anti-submarine escort role, with battleships as the centerpiece, like was standard for all navies at that time.
3. The first escort carriers were constructed well before FDR took office.
4. Oh yeah, and Pearl Harbor was the first instance of the use of an independent carrier strike force in history, so saying FDR intended to prepare for a tactic that did not yet exist would require you to present his crystal ball, because the only other explanation is you, like many other stupid niggers, are arguing under the premise that FDR was equipped with your hindsight.

Nah, get fucked.
