Overall though, this will and at the same time will not lead to large changes in the Philippines. For the time of Duterte, there may be a detente of sorts with China and Flipland may try forging a new sort of independent identity. They may be some Chink weapons, maybe appease the Chinese, I don't know but its obvious Duterte is shifting in that direction. Even if I'm an American-born Flip, I'm not necessarily perturbed by this since the Philippines was going to have to grow a pair eventually and try and assert some kind of independence sooner or later. Even if I may have a strong dislike of the chicoms, Duterte dealing with them isn't too troubling at least at the moment since despite his talk if he starts ceding portions of the Philippines naval territory to the Chinks, he's done. Flips may be a poor and stupid people, but they can be very nationalistic regarding certain things and they want to keep those islands.
Now what I doubt will change in Duterte's presidency is that despite his rhetoric, even if Filipinos may come to distrust the US government this won't break the connection we have as societies (if for the simple reason that the largest number of overseas Flips reside in the US of A, and they usually keep in frequent contact with their relatives back home). I asked most of my family on the other side and friends I'd made the last time I visited, and while most had indeed voted for Duterte they were overwhelmingly more concerned with his war on drugs and their approval of that rather than anything else he was doing.
