You could look for puppies online, they aren't hard to find in the US. Do tend to be a bit expensive. I'm lucky I got her from a shelter.

As for temperament? Depends on the dog. Mine has always been fine once she gets used to the schedule. Long as she knows dad will be back, she's good to go. That said, I'd recommend investing in large bones, tough chew toys, and raw hides. Mine is a bit of a chewer so I have to give her something at least every two days or she starts looking for stuff to gnaw on.

But again, I got her from a shelter so she has always been very eager to please. Probably afraid of being abandoned again. Which made her pretty easy to train.

About 3 years, had her for a year. Yes you run the risk of a dog that can't be rehabilitated but that's why you meet the dog before buying and then you put the effort in to rehabilitate them.

She damn near took my fingers off a few times if I touched her tail, now she cuddles up with her head on my chest when we go to sleep. All because I put the effort into training her and more importantly, in her case at least, properly socializing her so she won't freak out and fuck someone up.

He is larger now, around 85-90lbs, and should keep growing for another 14 months. I've been keeping him on the lean side purposefully for his bones growth so I think he'll be just fine 6-9yrs from now. Also, he sleeps from about 10am - 5pm with the occasional nap until night time. Then from 730pm - 6am he is up watching and barking. He used to bark alot, but he has been quieting down for the most part unless he sees people or something he isn't used to. He is great with goats, chickens, and smaller animals but he doesn't realize how big he is. So I have to watch him because he might try to play too rough with smaller dogs and cats.

My Pupper's name was Bonnie. I got her when I was ten from some crack whore. It did not take long before she proved herself /k/. A cougar was stalking in my yard a year or so later and nearly got me. Bonnie when ballistic and bit the Cat on the back and barreled it over. Cat slashed her across her side. Bonnie didn't make any noise but a wild series of barks that spooked the cat into the bush. It took about three months of rehab before Bonnie was back up and at it again.

You would think she would be more careful, but no. Over the course of the next 5 years, Bonnie put the chase on black bears, brown bears and one time sent one clambering up a tree. She loved guns, absolutely loved them. We went hunting and she would retrieve, no matter if she wasn't built for it, or as age slowed her down.

18 months ago, her back end finally gave out. Sh was still full of life, but she couldn't walk well, and it just kept getting worse. I tried to delude myself that everything was gong to be fine, but she was a 16 year old German Shepherd Rottweiler. Eventually she seemed start getting confused and lost. I didn't mind cleaning up after her, but quality of life was getting bad for her, but I just didn't have the stomach to end it for a while. Eventually she had a seizure and I called the vet, who been treating Bonnie for years. She dropped by at 3am in the morning with the euthanasia shots and we sat over her bed and let her go finally in peace.

This was January of last year, the vet left after we had a couple drinks, then I proceeded to get blitz drunk and went outside in the frozen morning and pound out a five foot deep grave for her with a shovel, an axe for roots, a pickaxe and my goddamn hands.

I have a couple more puppers brought in before Bonnie died, but they're too goofy to hunt or stalk. No intensity, no scary moment facing a predator when they young to shape them. There will never be another Bonnie again.
