Thumb tacks? Nope, it's tough to get enough air pressure in them to penetrate clothing reliably. What you need are hypodermic syringes from glucose testing kits coated in neurotoxins. The pressure chambers and springs can be modified to deliver more energy to the darts and if you're really adventurous you can add co2 propulsion. A good face shot (easy with the right model) could disable an attacker in the following seconds after they stop laughing at you and begin swearing.

But think about this: wouldn't it be better to have a pellet gun with concave projectiles coated in semen so they break the skin and stick to the victim? You are guaranteed to put somebody's eye out with one of your loads. I think you're going about this Nerf thing all wrong.

I can say definitively that they are not viable for self defense. One of my friends shot me with one and it only really made me mad. I ended up locking him in a closet for about three hours. It was a fun time. I wonder how he's doing.
