How do you propel the disk?

This is really forcing the neurons in my brain to fire electrical signals at each other, inducing computation

The better question would be "Why wouldn't the disk/sphere thing just strip the gear teeth off?"

Years ago when I was in science class in grade school, we were learning about light and how it reflects off of different materials, we learned that darker colours absorb light, and lighter colours reflect it, such as a white T-shirt or rocks. A kid put his hand up and asked "is that why vampires don't appear in mirrors?" We were extremely puzzled, the teacher asked him to repeat his question, so he said; "Well vampires are really pale, so they reflect all the light, that's why you can't see them in mirrors, right?". And that was by far the dumbest thing I'd ever heard until I saw this thread.
>>
>>31568428
You provide the gear teeth with enough shear strength? How is that a good question?
>>
So the disk is propelled by regular powder then hits the teeth on the barrel so it will get spinning?

Hell, just make it so the bullets are accepted by soda machines as coins and I'm sold

>ITT: /k/ throws around technical terms like "Magnus effect" and call OP stupids while show how little they understand about aerodynamics and mechanics
Wew lad. This thread is sad. Btw, I think the idea is interesting. Btw retards that think the barrel would be hard to make are the dumbest people ITT.
>>
>>31568521
So a forward-spinning disc would be stable? It wouldn't curve up or down? Obviously you know more about this than me, and can anewer this.
>>
>>31568099
I dont think this would be a good kinetic qeapon but as a bomb drone deployment system then it could be promising.

Guided explosive frisbees.
>>
>>31568521
I was a chief engineer at Northrop Grumman for 12 years.

OP's idea is fucking stupid.
>>
>>31568537
yes it would curve up (it should spin the opposite way) and yes it would increase the range
>>
>>31568583
Because it wouldn't tumble at all, right?
>>
>>31568583
Wouldon't this make zeroing for different ranges very difficult, since it would not follow a ballistic path
>>
>>31568521
>implying

nigga a spinning disk or sphere deflects air, causing instability and a measurable impact on ballistics, it ain't hard. it even affects normal bullets with crosswind, but this effect would be far more pronounced.

No, actually it wouldn't, lol.

>>31568618
Just because it's different doesn't mean it's harder. No, you wouldn't use your typical ballistics tables
>>
>>31568641

instability or stability, but deflection regardless, I mean.
>>
>>31568641
So frisbees are not stable? Do you just suck at throwing? Or is the world record throw of over 300 meter a lie?
>>
>>31568583
>yes it would curve up
wrong a forward spinning disk would curve down.
hopups spin the ball backward and they cause it to fly a straighter path than naturally without it.

depending on the center of pressure, it will make it stable or instable, but regarldless it deflects the object.

I believe the engineer more than i believe you.
>>
>>31568641
You literally have no idea how the Magnus effect works and you're just parroting fuddlore. I don't think you understand what stability means either.
Yes it will deflect, but that can be used to it's advantage. Backspin etc.

Crosswind induced Magnus effect on a bullet is acting on a different plane (side to side, not up and down

Read up on gyroscopes for your question about stability

>Frisbees

If OPs design was set up with the disks spinning counter clockwise it might actually help mitigate bullet drop.

>>31568750

crosswind on bullets causes defection up and down, perpendicular to the airflow, shows how much you know.

and I corrected myself, idjit. whether the magnus affect is a stabilizing force or an unstabilizing force depends on the center of pressure of the object in flight.
>>
>>31568747
Doesn't state his concerns with the design. Might be the merit about spinning the projectile, might be the fact that a spinning projectile is inaccurate, but this isnt how an engineer declines a disign, speaking as an engineer myself at a electrical firm(so not expert myself on the design, but on the methodology)
>>
>>31568788
what are you trying to prove? that you have zero reading comprehension?
>>31568795
My bad, you're right about the cross wind. I misspoke because the wind is acting in a different plane.

I believe you're trying to apply definitions of stability on a bullet or aircraft which are inapplicable here.
OP's bullet will not tumble around it's axis of translational movement because of the gyroscopic effect
It also will not significantly deviate from its forward flight path from Magnus. If it has backspin, Magnus would fight against bullet drop

Sure seems stable to me.

Most firearms designed to discharge a single projectile at a time typically have a bullet guide feature known as “rifling”. The process of rifling provides lands with interleaved helical (“spiral”) grooves within the barrel of a round-bored firearm, generally with two or more grooves cut or milled throughout the length of the barrel. The diameter of the projectile or bullet that is fired through the barrel corresponds with the groove diameter. The rifling causes the projectile to spin and become gyroscopically stabilized.

>>31568939
>what are you trying to prove? that you have zero reading comprehension?
*include predator sounds*
>>
>>31568947
Put the teeth on top so you have backspin and you have a 10/10 design
>>
File: metalgear9.png (13KB, 1732x1929px) Image search: [Google]
metalgear9.png
13KB, 1732x1929px
The projectile is then aerodynamically stabilized and has increased accuracy. The “twist rate” of rifling defines the distance the projectile moves within the barrel to complete one full revolution. The shorter the distance, the greater (faster) the twist rate, so that the projectile is rated at a faster spin rate. For spherical lead balls, only a low twist rate (e.g., 1 turn in 48 inches) is used, while barrels used with long narrow bullets have faster twist rates (e g., 1 turn in 8 inches). The twist rate may increase within the barrel. Generally, firearm barrels have rifling that provides a twist rate to stabilize the type of projectile for which the firearm is typically used.

-bullet case and bullet providing increased stability when the firearm is tired.

-disk-shaped bullet that is compact and thin for high capacity storage and magazine loading.

-bullet that has greater penetration, similar to a rotating circular blade, with greater surface edge.

This guy would come on here about a year or so ago with MS paint Schematics for a "new Revolutionary fire arm" and said that he was going to email kel-tec to see if they would look at his ideas.

I think he "made" a short piston gun. A Revolver carbine and some sort of lever delayed blowback design

As far as I could tell he never pulled the "Jokes on you I was only pretending to be retarded"

As a result anytime comes up with some retarded firearms schematic the meme is " You should Email Kel-tec they might like it" ect. ect.

right but rifling runs the length of a barrel because it is aligned along the trajectory of the bullet

your very first "tooth" will start your projectile turning at some "twist rate," and that will be entirely dependent on how it deforms and inhibits the projectile, and that "twist rate" immediately decays along with the velocity of the projectile before it leaves the barrel

the subsequent teeth might maintain the twist rate but at the cost of significantly reducing MV
