7.62x54r is damn near identical to .30-06, but is generally inferior for hunting because nuggets, Veprs, and PSLs aren't as accurate as a .30-06 bolt gun.

Why are black bears father than grizzlies? Also shot placement is more important than anything, I've known people who have taken moose with a .270. As for 7.62×54 it's about equivalent to a .308.

7.62x54R is a beast! I would suspect that you could hunt practically any big game with it. There's a few videos on YouTube of dudes punching 15" gongs @ 1,000 yards with Mosins.

Nugget ammo would work on essentially deer and up(predators&varmint if you don't mind a red mist instead of a skin), but as some annon said, the rifles chambered in 7.62x54r aren't good hunting rifles

.223 can take deer just fine, at least in the South where our deer are small.

This anon is correct. Since 5.56 was designed to wound it's useless as a hunting round.

Unless you shoot it out of an AR-15, in which case it will work, but the animal will be blown to pieces and there won't be any meat left.
