I prefer the old school Storm Troopers. No, not the ancient school ones, the only-old ones. The helmets and gas masks are super rad, the solid armour looks nice and bulky, and the big backpacks with hanging grenades and rolled-up ponchos really made them look pretty damn operating.

Depends the era. Earliest Mandalorians were a tribe that roamed on Coruscant and then were kicked to Mandalore. Eventually they got over their xenophobia and allowed other species to make it in. Then a Mandalore (AKA Pope) came onto the vision that to praise their god, (Kad'harangir) they must do war.

The first Sith empire came and offered an alliance, being the underdogs at the time and offering a glorious battle against the sith.

They lost, and many clans were left resented over it, hating jedi or force users outright. Timeskip some time, Mandalore the Ultimate with the help of Cassus Fett turned the disparaged clans into one uniform army of pure operating badassery (Neo Crusaders) and fought the Republic for teh lulz.

They lost gloriously and clans spreaded further than ever, heterogizing their beliefs and letting way for the 'Manda' thinking to appear, which is basically believing in a Mandalorian Valhalla.

The only thing that stuck through all the erad was the resol'nare, a code that dictates how they must live their life and I'm too lazy to elaborate in.

They don't talk about the world too much outside of the occasional novel, but because of that we have it established that Cadian fashion tends to include camo patterns, and after the first time they were invaded they said fuck it to the standard grid design of cities and redesigned them into jigsaw puzzles that are perfect for hiding machinegun nests, bunkers, and snipers in.

Basically Cadia is "/k/ the Planet" (Catachan is /out/ the planet, for the record... I guess that makes /g/ Mars, and /b/ the Eye of Terror).

They do have heavy weapons, they operate like special forces squads where everyone's got a job, in ODST they have a squad leader, heavy weapons specialist, engineer, designated marksman/sniper etc. Heavy guns carries a spartan laser with him

Nah, they just wanted to keep appealing a little more to mainstream audiences and watered the whole game down.

There's no more stamina so there's no point to using light armour with the exception of a minimal speed boost
Every single gun is laser beam accurate without any kick so there's no point in making anything but a max damage gun
Basically every single camo pattern now has to be bought with IRL money, even camo patterns you bought with in-game currency before this were locked
Every single new gadget in the game is basically a one shot "throw and forget" machine just so you can get at least one easy kill every game
Infared sights are easy as fuck to get and everyone and their mom has one, to the point where anti-infared has become a crucial gadget
Weapon parts like barrels and sights can no longer be swapped between weapon types, if you have a barrel for an assault rifle you still have to buy the exact same barrel for sub machine guns

The game is beyond repair at this point, it's just a cheap generic shooter now.

The problem with this is that most sci-fi artists and writers don't really have a good understanding of actual the actual military, operators or otherwise, and often end up making shit that seems over-designed, impractical, or just bizarre. This often pops up with sci-fi art, but its really bad with sci-fi writing about the military, especially when they try to be really "gritty", and ends up with a bunch of silly cliches.

Heinlein was a USNA grad, so I'm pretty sure he just took the service academies' "death by volume of work" philosophy and exaggerated it. While the OCS described in Starship Troopers was ridiculously difficult, it isn't entirely unrealistic. West Point cadets were required, until the recent curriculum changes, to take 4 math courses minimum, 2 chemistry, 2 physics, and philosophy class--among the many other courses that make up the core curriculum.

40k used to have several types of Stormtroopers

Imperial Guard Stormtroopers, which was a single elite Regiment of unspecified size

Inquisitorial Stormtroopers which weren't especially elite but were basically the Inquisition's Internal Troops
