AR-7 is great. The only maker you should avoid are those made and sold by Charter Arms.

its a gun that sounds great on paper but sucks shit in reality. if you want a plinker dont buy it. if you want a small compact object that can turn into a gun its good at that.

Both? It's not awful but there are better options. Take it on a day hike or back packing trip and try not to fall on it.

If you really want something great for that job, check out the m6 scout, originally made by Springfield and recently rebooted in a slightly less awesome version by Chiappa.

Everything I've heard about this tells me you're better off just buying a 10/22 takedown model. The only thing the AR7 has over that is it floats, but if your car/truck goes under it's more than likely taking your rifle with it regardless of whether it floats or not.

It's not like an AR7 is going to keep your backpack floating or anything if you drop it in a river. If you're really that worried about dropping your gun in water just tie a float to a 10/22 or bubba the fuck out of it and fill the stock with expanding foam.

Personally for a survival gun I'd prefer a bolt action anyway. Semiauto .22s tend to have a lot of issues with certain ammo.
