Damn that is pretty gruesome I always wondered why people recommend bear spray since the thing is still probably going to try maiming someone spraying them.

Bear spray and fuddy five. Hell anything that can feasibly punch holes in boars will work for bears.

You need a lot more bullets too. Bear spray is the most effective tool for deterring a charging bear under 100 yards. Big caliber plus big bullets means it bleeds out faster. Smaller caliber or less bullets is fucking retarded, unless you hit the heart it's fucking killing you because you just pissed it off more.

A large majority of black bear attacks are predatory and they can be fought off with success.

Grizzlies, the majority of the time, attack out of territorial defense or fear. If fighting becomes no longer an option, protect what you can and play dead.

Both are prone to either course of attack, but generally these are semi-reliable algorithms for making it back home alive.

Fortunately I just have black bears here. No brown. I always wondered if my 44 mag would be enough. I'm sure shot placement is the biggest factor. If it was a hit to the cheast/neck/brain bucket, I honestly can't see how a brown bear would make it more than a few feet. I use good loads in my 7inch Redhawk. Its devastating.

Brown bears are notoriously territorial, especially sows with cubs. You want to be a non-threat to them. If she charges, you play dead. Any movement, even away from her, will trigger more attacks once she's committed to fucking up your day. She'll leave you alone once she thinks you're dead.

Now a blackbear, on the other hand, is the one your fight. They're looking for a meal.

It is better than nothing, but there have actually been a few documented cases of "unarmed" grizzly bear kills, pic related, and multiple others killed with anything ranging from 5.45 up to...uh...well, I don't actually know the upper limit. Probably a 20mm or something.

In your case, I would recommend a caliber larger/more powerful than 10mm.
