The point of an S-duct is to hide the fan blades (the highest RCS part of the engine) from a frontal radar emitter. I couldn't immediately find a frontal profile on google images, but look how the duct on the bottom profile only moves over about 1/2 of the width of the engine. You can still see the fan blades from the front. Compare that to:

This. Notice how from the front the only thing you can see is the inside of the duct curving inwards and the hidden fan blades. The difficulty is not the bending itself, but the sharp angle necessary to actually hide the blades.
