Distantly related, but there was a test conducted rooting back to asian cavalry using blankets (think parachute behind drag car) to deflect incomming arrows. It worked, actually.
Fuck yeah!
You'll probably have to make it about 10 cm thick and then it might stand a slight chance of blocking something but sure, you can make armour out of silk.

You can make armor out of air.
Just make sure you got a few miles of it between you and the .40 Problem Solver.
Yes. It works well for stopping butterflies

Supposedly Mongolian higher-ups had silk vests, because the silk would "catch" the arrow somewhat, preventing a barbed arrow from snagging the skin. You could just tug on the silk vest and it'd pop the arrow out.

I shouldn't have laughed at this.

Got any data to backup that statement?

OP here, I was just reading on Wikipedia about documented cases of silk handkerchiefs stopping black powder revolver bullets. An 1851 Navy will penetrate ballistic gel nearly as far as a 9mm, some guy on YouTube tested one against a Beretta.
And thick silk vests were used to protect against bullets a hundred years ago, back when smokeless powder was a thing. Archduke Ferdinand had one he never wore.

Confirmed Mongolian calvary and archers wore just silk shirts for that reason. Hiliraous when they fought the Teutonic Knights who wore like 100 lbs of steel plate and Mongolia arrows went right through.

It's a good thing Archduke Ferdinand owned one.
"the first bullet wounded the Archduke in the jugular vein, the second inflicted an abdominal wound on the Duchess."
oh.
