Solvent/lubricant combination products work fine, but not as well as products. CLP is basically water, Ballistol is a little more aggressive and may hurt fine finishes like nickle plating or gold inlay if left on for storage. If you have nice guns that you've invested money into, take care of them. If you have a wally world 870, do whatever the fuck you want to it.

His borrowed guns are most likely not lubed with Ballistol because a shop or factory would know better. He doesn't hunt. He just shoots in his back yard on nice days. That's not much of a test. He's probably the guy that does a full take down and cleaning after each shooting. Considering his age I'd honestly be surprised if he didn't use Ballistol.
