A 9mm carbine that takes Glock magazines is a good option. having a couple of big sticks filled with Gold Dots and something you can put to your shoulder is probably ideal for suburban home defense, in my mind.

A 12 gauge with #4 buck is another good option

A Full sized service pistol is also a good option, I personally prefer 9mm Glocks for the above reason, but if you don't have a PCC to pair with it you almost can't go wrong with reputable manufacturers.

The more important aspect to me than the type of firearm you settle on is that it have a momentary on white light mounted to it for target identification. Ideally the light also has a strobing feature like the TLR-1 HL, but that's just gravy, really. 300-600 lumen seems like a good output rating for indoors from what I've seen running clearance in my own house at night.

Another important aspect of a home defense firearm is that its ammo gets carried with it *all the time*. A side saddle or stock sleeve is a good choice for a shotgun, a sling mounted spare magazine is a good option for a PCC (mount it towards the butt if possible to avoid reducing your maximal swing speed.

Final consideration: make sure that wherever you choose for your safe room to be has areas everyone who might need shelter in there can be safe from bullets shot at their location from the entryway. Book shelves, soft armor, and heavy hard wood furniture are all good options.

single buckshot packs seven 8.5mm lead balls, each packing as much power as a common .38spl / 9mm bullet. Weak penetration and short effective range too, so you won´t be killing your neighbor´s kid across the street. It´s also piss easy to fire at least 2 shots / second with a smooth pump.
There are also cheap semi-auto Mossys around, if that´s more to your liking.

You could spend the rest on ammo, and a cheap 9mm handgun.

if you're worried about over penetration get hollow point rounds. If someone is desperate enough to break into a home then they're not likly to have full body armor and a gun.

get something small and/or light, in a fast moving life or death situation you'll appreciate it. but not at the range.

Lastly you'll be MUCH better off if whatever you get has both a laser sight and a POWERFUL flashlight. most break ins happen at night and people usually run when there's both a laser and a light (usually means a gun in the US) as well as meaning that you're a serious investor to your life and well being.

Are they in the house? Mossberg 500 or equivilant. Under 20m you want a 12ga Shotgun with buckshot. Accept no substitutes.

Are you in the suburbs? Intermediate cartridge weapon (5.56) like an AR15. AK is fine. Whatever is fine, as long as it's at least a 16 inch barrel. Being in the suburbs means you're going to have to do escalation of force while the cops show up. Having a full size rifle is mostly for the "show" aspect, 'cause baby-killing ARs and all that. Just being obviously armed is going to be enough for most situations, but if you do have to escalate, an intermediate cartridge means you'll be able to spray them down with fast, accurate fire.

Live in the country? I live in the middle of nowhere. You need a full power cartridge like 7.62 or bigger in semi-auto. You're far enough out that you're at risk of nightmare scenario where armed assailants will fuckin kick your door down, tie you up, and take everything of value. Seriously, it happened to people the next road over two years ago. Therefore, you need a round that can pierce intermediate cover like exterior doors and vehicles and remain lethal. Put them down before they even realize the fight's begun. Plus, you can reliably reach out and touch someone out to 500m or more. Useful if you've got a lot of land.
