To be honest, SMOM were always been hospitaliers, so even back then they always prioritized hospitals over fortifications.

The only thing religiously related in the US military are Army/Navy Chaplians 56A MOS. These are commissioned; not enlisted positions, they are not allowed to carry weapons, are not allowed to dispense actual denominational religious advice, only government approved sanatized "spiritual wellbeing" advice to servicemen of all religions and heathens from behind a desk, and are never embedded into direct combat units. Oh and they baptize enlisted men's Jody's babies in a home depot bucket.

For the anons that went the theology route, I'm a little curious, is a degree in theology different from becoming a minister/pastor/preacher/whathaveyou or is it more like once you get the degree, you can either continue the scholar route or choose to take your knowledge into the ministry?

I ask because it's an area I've recently become interested in; already have a career path set but have been returning to my spirituality and have found a bit of a curiosity towards religion and faith. There's a part of me that wonders what it would be like to dive into it more but doubt I'd be completely right for that kind of depth with it.

However, that's not terribly important, unless he wants to call a crusade personally.
A crusade could be called by the College of Bishops; it can also be called in one dicoese by one bishop, and it can also be done if it is not against the faith, and done defensively ("sometimes a good offence" etc)

A theological degree is only useful if you want to become a Catholic priest, a Theologian, or a Catholic apologist.

If you are sincerely interested in studying theology, make it your hobby. If I were to do it all again, I would become a plumber and study theology on the side; in fact, one of my good friends is an electrician and willbe able to get his phD in Theology quite soon, and wuite comfortably. Trades jobs will pay the bills, theological studies will pay the soul.

For the eternal student, I really recommend reading "The intellectual life" by Sertillange. It's beautiful and practical.
