Torture tests of M4 and M4A1 with 30 rounds magazines:
http://atwar.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/01/12/m4-and-m4a1-guns/?hp&_r=0

First video: M4 fails after 535 rounds. Start of shooting at 0:02. Barrel drooping at 1:20. Catastrophic failure at 1:48. RPM: ~303.

Second video: M4A1 (heavier barrel than standard M4) fails to cycle after 911 rounds. Start of shooting at 0:11. Failure to cycle at 4:46. RPM: ~199.

Torture test of G36A0 with 100-rounds magazines back in the early 90s:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTbTyFloelc
Start of shooting at 0:33. 900th round fired without failure at 3:16. RPM: ~331.
Later, once the handguard isn't on fire anymore, the weapon fires another 30 round mag flawlessly.

That's pretty darn good IMHO familia.

In reality though, no soldier is ever going to fire 500+ rounds on full-auto non-stop. That's far more ammunition than a soldier can even carry.
>>
>>31533033
Depends. At a base of with a vehicle soldiers may have access to more. How many rounds were fired during the battle of Wanat through some of the weapons that failed to function?
>>
>>31532963
>Literally 6 years + 10 months old.
The G36 is fine. It was purely political malice coming from a non military source. Shame because now they're going to piss away money on trials and eventual adoption of the 416 when it's not needed.
>>
>>31533064
The problem is that this is the literal maximum stress test on the rifle.

If you are in a situation that requires you to magdump 500+ round of ammunition in a general direction, you had problems a long time before you fired the first round.

A soldier MAY burn through 500+ rounds, but I guarantee there will be breaks and the rifles will have a chance to cool off.

This, i cannot believe they are going through with it. Not that the 416 is a bad gun, its just such a waste. Its such an aesthetic gun, shame.
>>
>>31532963
The G36 looks cool and shit but the AR is the best rifle in it's category, there's nothing better than it right now.

Yes. The Germans managed to put an AR-18 into a plastic shell.
>>

>If you are in a situation that requires you to magdump 500+ round of ammunition in a general direction, you had problems a long time before you fired the first round.
Yeah, like being overrun at Wanat. It'd be good if soldiers can rely on their weapons even in these extreme circumstances.

There isn't a single available 5.56 assault rifle that could reliably and effectively shoot that much in that short amount of time.

Rebuttal, M4 with a pencil barrel
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kzfm4pYhIyY

I counted approximately 25 magazines fired until the weapon was functionally a single shot rifle due to a catastrophic failure of the gas tube.

Starts firing @ 0:11
First failure is a cook off @ 2:15
Gas tube catastrophic failure @ 4:30
Video ends @ 5:19

Uhh, that's what's happening with the replacement of the M4 with the M4A1.

Nope. I am saying though that good engineering is often found when a guy improves existing things. Edison, in particular, being a case in point. Another one is the improvement of the steam engine by James Watt.

that "German engineering" is actually American engineering as well, the G36 is a modified clone of Stoner's AR-18.

>>31533673
Seems so. Where did it go from an article reporting on regular soldiers being outfitted with the M4A1 and stating that it has a heavier barrel to socom?
>>
>>31533754
Because the m4a1 has the same barrel as the m4.
Only modern (like 2013 and newer) m4a1 have the socom barrel and if it was earlier it was a SOCOM thing.
>>
>>31533460
Various countries did end up adopting it, but because of the European colonies in Africa failing, China dicking around in communism and the Soviets going down hill, there was a massive number of AKs for any country that needed arms and we're okay with dealing with Communists, so it didn't see wide spread adoption.
>>
>>31533772
Wait a sec. The discussion began with the question why it was necessary to outfit the M4 with a heavier barrel when upgraded to the M4A1 here: >>31533237
To which you replied that they use the same barrel. Then I cite an article to prove the opposite and now it's somehow all invalid? Help me, I'm still lost.

>>
>>31533889
The m4a1 orginal used the m4 barrel.
Some time in the 2000s you got the socom barrel.
Then finally like 2 or 3 years ago it became standard for m4a1s to come with the socom barrel.

>>
>>31533990
Maybe you don't understand. The question is how that would matter in the context of the original question that spawned this discussion.
How does the timing of the change prove that it's not necessary to outfit soldiers with weapons that sport heavier barrel, when the Army is doing precisely that?
>>
>>31534039
Because it's often done to prolong weapon life. Slapping ah heavy barrel on an assault rifle doesn't make it a lmg.
>>
>>31532963
>Develop polymer rifle
>it weighs 1+lb more than a design 30 years its junior
"German Engineering"
>>
>>31534088
Uh, prolonging weapon life would be done by simple replacement with original spec parts. Much cheaper. What seems to be so ambiguous to you with this simple sentence:
>A thicker barrel will absorb more heat in the new M4-A1 carbine, should a Soldier need to flip the selector to auto, according to Soldiers overseeing the new configuration now being added to the M4.
that you feel the need to invent your own explanation?
>>
>>31534135

Not him, but...

G36: 3.63 kg (8.00 lb) w/ 18.9" barrel
G36K: 3.0 kg (6.6 lb) w/ 12.5" barrel
M16: 3.26 kg (7.18 lb) w/ 20" barrel
M4: 2.88 kg (6.36 lb) w/ 14.5" barrel

It doesn't take long to look up the numbers, man.

Gotta look at the bigger picture m8. If they do adopt the 416 now both Germany and France will be sharing the same service rifle. It's just one small, but important, step towards a united federalized, continental army.

Seems to depend on the source where you get the numbers from. Official US military figure for the M16 (not clear which variant) with 30 round magazine is 8.79 pounds.
see: http://www.dodig.mil/Audit/reports/FY07/07-010.pdf
and: http://www.tecom.marines.mil/Portals/120/Docs/Student%20Materials/FMST%20Manual/m16.doc

Official figures from the German military of the G36A2 are 3470 grams for the empty weapon and 483 grams for a loaded 30 round mag. That's a total of 8.71 pounds for a weapon with a 1.1 inch shorter barrel but with integrated optics.
