Hi /K, I'm looking to buy a Springfield Socom M14 at Oaks Gun show next weekend. The price ranges from $1500-2000. I just want to know is this the best option for starting to build my DMR? This will be my first rifle so I want to make a good choose for the money. If you can post images and prices for better options to help me make a decision. Please and Thank you in advance.
>>
>>31532247
Why the fuck would you waste your money on an M14?
>>
As a lover of M14s, do yourself a favor and buy an AR-10 instead. Unless you're a canuck, then a M308 is a good choice for a first gun if you cant stand slav shit SVTs/SKSs and you can afford the ~$1 per round .308.
>>
Get a 20 inch PTR with a trigger job, bull barrel, and an hk bipod.

Slap a scope on it.

Done.
>>
>>31532247
>>31532247
Accurizing them is a lot of money and time. After all is said and done you could spend the same money on a SCAR or some AR platform and get the same to better accuracy out the box. That being said I own a AR10 and will probably be purchasing a socom as well because reasons. It's your money so do what you want with it. Will you just be killing paper or what?
>>
>>31532280
As someone who spent a lot of time and money accurizing a M1A (WY gunsmith glass bedding, unitized gas cylinder, machined receiver for sadlak mount), I regret nothing. It's now a beautiful (and heavy) rifle.

I love my m1a nm, but there are better options for the DMR role tahn the m14, sure it's a classic, but it's also dated as a weapon design. I use to scoff at folk who said the m14 was the best riffle of ww2, but that saying does kinda ring true...

I'm not saying you can't love and enjoy the m14 see
>>31532857
>>31532280
>>31532262
But having spent a lot of time on one , and reloading for it, I'd look else where for a DMR.

Also you're gonna wanna define your "mission" for your DMR really...really....really well before settling on a platform.

Weight
Suppressed vs unpressed
Precision
Long range vs Urban
5.56 cal vs 6mm vs 30 cal and each ones merits in the above section.
Overall operation cost and longevity
and so on.

If you're dead set on getting an m14 styled rifle, do your self a favor and really dig into the subject, the US govt spent a long time trying to fix the m14 for the role you're looking for and ended up bailing for the most part.

Why you want the M14 to begin with bro? Anyways if you really want a nice starter level rifle for precision shooting just go with remmy 700 and waste the rest in optics, a better stock and a reloading bench.

Once you get good at that shit and learn how to measure your ambient conditions and calculate the firing solution you can get something better.

Seriously nigga, get a remmy 700, swfa x10 scope and AICS stock.

Here's the ranking of battle rifles, in descending order, according to the head instructor of the Battle Rifle Class at Gunsite:

1) FN SCAR 17
2) FN FAL (w/ flat-top reciever)
3) AR-10
4) M-14/M1A
5) HK 91
6) M1 Garand

Of course, this ranking is a matter of opinion to a certain extent, but my point in posting this is that the M14/M1A is not the best modern option for a battle rifle or DMR. It's ergos are old-fashioned, and its design is not optimal for mounting optics.

If you're really committed to the M14 design (a sentiment to which I empathize), I recommend getting the Scout Squad (18" barrel) instead. The 16" barrel is pretty wasteful for 7.62x51, but the full-size 22" is unwieldy by modern standards.

M1As are cool but you should just get an AR or even a 10/22 for your first. If you're hell bent on getting a M1A you should get a fullsized one

>>
>>31532247
get a colt 901, or a Daniel defense 762, or an ar10.

For the money, colt is best value because you can swap the upper for an ar15 upper. 1 gun 2 calibers

cheapest is ar10, and most expensive and high quality is the DD

Good job anons.

Here OP, here's something that is actually precise enough to be considered a DMR. Better than any SVD or PSL which is considered the definition of DMR.

You have so many other great options unlike me here in NofunEU

Unsuppressed moving to suppressed later on.
Ammo .308
Precise and Accurate
Urban combat rang 200-800 yrds
From my research the basic rifle SCAR - FAL are all about the same price ranged (1500-2000 USD). I'm open to better options for the body then moving to the optical and etc later. Thanks

FNAR BRAND FNAR

PA fag here we might very well be neighbors, you have to really search for a good deal at the Oaks show now. Like most gun shows it has gotten very expensive quickly. Try Kings Shooters and Insight Firearms. If you are willing to take the drive try Shydas or Tanners they usually have good prices.

Here's mine. Springfield Armory M1As are hit and miss with quality control and receiver specs. They do take a lot of work and money to accurize, and they're not the friendliest to mounting optics. If you're going for a .308 semi-auto precision rifle, you're going to want to look at AR10s unless you have a huge M1A boner. I picked mine up just because I was cruising armslist for good deals and happened to find one. If you really want an M1A, go with Fulton Armory. Expensive up-front but you know its a quality rifle from the start.

Yeah, me too. The only thing I dont like is the bald-spot in the handguard from where I removed the scout rail. I ordered another handguard but they fucked up and mailed me a brown one. I might just end up painting it green to match.
