I'd say get an AR, but the only real thing to do is go to your local gun shot and fold their rifles, see what has a Length of pull that suits you, isn't too heavy to comfortably shoulder and in a caliber you can easily pay for.

Buy a basic bitch AR and get some good iron sights. Maybe a weapon flight.

I have been taking my garand and a cloth bandolier full of clips with me as of late. 8 rounds of a caliber that will down anything, easy to load, semi auto, you use grease to lube it. If you live near a cmp I highly recommend going to get one.
