Yes, they are clearly different designs. They are both the same caliber and both use detachable mags. This makes them similar functionally on a baseline.

ARs have the advantage of more widespread magazines and more variety in aftermarket parts. The widespread availability of flattop ARs makes attaching optics much easier. The ability to swap uppers on ARs means switching barrel lengths or pre-zeroed optics is easier and makes them cost effective.

I own both and a mini 30 And if I hear Bumpty bumps in the night my mini 30 is my Go to Gun otherwise my Mossberg 500 obviously backed up by either a 1911 or Para Ordnance.
I am older and wiser however and live in a rural setting with no neighbors I don't have to worry about Over penetration.
