Had nothing to do with the case.

Assuming what you were told was true, it was due to steel core bullet sparking on the backstop. There's no scenario where a steel case could start a fire.

(X)M193 5.56 is only a couple cpr more expensive than Wolf Gold .223. Does it make more sense to stock up on that?

They're just lazy, and do not want to have to sort out your steel from the free brass they get and sell off their range floors. That's it.

If you're just plinking get the cheapest brass you can find, no reason to spend more if you're just punching holes in paper at <100m. Just like rifle setup, ammo choice should depend on intended use.
