AK barrels have a service life of something like 20,000 rounds or so, so yeah there is a better than average chance that barrel is toast. That's not even taking in to account the use of ammo with corrosive primers.

The gun looks fine except for that gaudy colorfill that you ruined the rollmarks with.

HK's answer would be that their HE finish has two layer. The inner layer is the actual corrosion resistant layer and is tough as nails. The outer layer is more for aesthetics and is what makes the gun look good. It's the outer layer that you rubbed off with your sandpaper holster.

I have no problem with people using colorfill on their HK's or doing whatever kind of stippling to the grip. But if you decide later that you want to sell it, don't think that anyone is going to pay what you think it's worth (probably way too high). You damaged the value of the gun, so it will only sell for less than fair market value unless you can un-fuck it.

OP more than likely the finish is QPQ. If it is then just because the black wear off does not means the finish has worn away. The finish is still there since the qpq process changes the outer 10 - 20 microns of steel, and the black finish is prolly 2-3microns thick at most.

I prefer kydex for pistols with no external safety

Kydex has great retention. Leather is more comfortable but I spent 7 hours in the car today with my glock in a kydex holster and I think I adjusted it once for better comfort

That being said I carry my 1911 and my S&W Governor (up north, east to conceal in winter under a carhartt) in leather

I always just assumed that bluing and finishing was to prevent rust and not to completely prevent abrasion from affecting the gun.

Also I like the effect filling in the letters has, you know, when it's done by professionals and not by people who make threads that are bad.

bluing does nothing to prevent rust. it's coloring only. heat treated steel has minor rust preventive properties, but it's mostly on the user to oil and maintain.

epoxy based and oxide based finishes - black oxide, rust bluing, powder coating like phosphating, or in aluminum anodizing or birdsong or whatever all are bonded to the surface to or conversion of the surface to inhibit the "bite" of oxygen to the steel.

duracote and cerakote and stuff is effectively specialty paint that's baked on. painting over parkerizing (manganese phosphate) is common as well as applying lacquer over some sort of undercoat.
