Because due to the weight of even the light loadings for it, recoil is significant.

Now for people who shoot often with things larger than .22lr, this doesn't mean much. But for people who don't shoot much at all (guy's wife/gf/sister, what have you) they don't usually understand what a good stance and proper shouldering is. This is usually evidenced by the "chick lean" you see so many inexperienced women shooters do.


With proper instruction and on range experience, literally anyone who's able to walk on their own two feet can shoot a 12 gauge.

My girlfriend says its because the stock on most shotguns is way too long and it is hard to shoulder it and still reach the foreend. Standard shotgun LOP is what, 14.5 inches? That's why its awkward for a woman of lesser stature to properly handle the gun. Combine this with the relatively heavy recoil, and there's your answer.

I purchased a Mossman 500 "Bantam" for my GF to solve this problem. It has a 13" LOP and a shortened pump stroke. I also put an 18" barrel on it to keep it from being too heavy. It is still a 12 gauge and has all the power of a fullsize, but its actually manageable now. It is currently her favourite gun and she shoots it very well.

TLDR: Typical shotguns are too unwieldy for girls.

Shorter LOP is better even for non manlets for a tactical\ fighting shotgun. I usually don't bother buying a new stock, but I chop a couple inches off most of the time. The long LOP works when in a wingshooting stance to get your swing on, but being able to get all the way behind the gun helps keep recoil controlled (not reduced, controlled) and bringing the Center of mass closer to your body eases manipulations and allows quicker pointing. So yeah, chop down both ends of your shotgun if you aren't hunting birds on the wing.

1. Form. Chick lean is literally the worst thing possible for absorbing recoil properly. There are many causes of chick lean but it basically boils down to bad/insufficient instruction/practice.
2. Tits get in the way. They don't have as well defined a shoulder pocket so they either end up with the stock on their tit or the stock on their bicep.
3. Bra straps. There's almost always a little pointy metal buckle pretty much directly behind the buttpad that digs into them.

Any one by itself isn't too bad, but combine all 3 and they get bruised up and pissy.

The stock on most shotguns is 14.25" LOP. Which should fit anybody between 5'5" and 6'2" well enough to shoulder properly and shoot well. Yes, there's a few that are 14.5" LOP, but they tend to be the higher-end clays guns (longer stocks, within reason, are better for wingshooting). Also, most of the "tactical" models are between 13.5" and 14.0" LOP to bring them more in line with rifle stocks since they're point-shooting or statically aimed weapons most of the time.

Shot trap with 2 girls (not traps) one was rather small but had a good stance, the other was built like a brick shit house and could probably standing shoot a 20mm without any problems.

Taught the missus how to shoot, got her started on a .22 then taught her how to shoot trap with soft shooting 12g ammo to get used to the guns (old browning citori under/over then a light franchi) before letting her smash a tree with 00.
